Dieting as most people mean it isn't a terribly safe idea. You need to make a couple of simple life changes that you can stick with, as well as exercise regularly.
Try to eat foods that are high in protein and low in fat, such as chicken (preferably not fried, boiled is best) and tofu. Low carb is something that you should probably incorporate, but don't overdo it, esp. the way the Atkins Diet says you should. Atkins is very dangerous, it is essentially a fast that completely deprives your body of carbs, which you need to live...actually, with the adances in modern medicine, you don't NEED carbs to live as long as you don't mind going to dialysis five times a week (i.e. kidney failure).
That being said, you should stay away from heavily refined carbs, such as sugar and white bread. Instead, try whole wheat or multigrain bread (Sara Lee has a honey wheat bread that is incredible...you won't even miss white bread)...also, whole wheat pasta is becoming more and more readily available.
Aside from that, try to drink more water if you are used to drinking sugary drinks. Maybe limit yourself to one soda every day or two and drink water the rest of the time. Buy a Brita or Pur water filter, it's just as good as, if not better than, bottled water.
Exercise regularly...you don't need to start a weight training regimen, but try walking regularly. Maybe if you need some light groceries, try walking to a grocery or convenience store if there's one close by. If you play video games, try Dance Dance Revolution (it worked to me :-)

My real advice would be this:
Exercise a little bit more, and eat a healthy and well balanced diet. Nobody seems to want to hear this one! It really, really works (for me at least) and the weight stays off
Ok, here's my reasoning:
It doesn't damage your body.
You won't get hungry and binge
You will look AND feel better
Exercise doesn't have to mean a 6 mile run, it can also be half an hour of brisk walking a day
You won't get cravings
You body won't think its starving and go into fat saving mode...
Drink a minimum of 1.5 litres of water a day, exercise and eat a well balance, nutritious diet.
I also suggest seeing a doctor if you are really looking to loose weight.

Take it from someone who has dealt with a weight issue all her life...no diet is the best. Moderate your serving sizes, cut back on the sweets and fat (but don't eliminate fat, your brain needs some) drink lots of water and exercise, even if it is just walking every day. There aren't any quick fixes. It takes longer to get the pounds off than it does to put them on. Be patient and good luck!

find calorie/fitness calculator on the net, enter all your stats and it will tell you how many calories you need a day to maintain, take off 300-400cal off that number and thats how much you need to lose.
eat 5-6 small meals a day (eat every 2-3 hours)
5-8 servings of fruit and veggies a day
8 glasses of water
have complex carbs for breakfast - they give you energy
have lean meat (protein) for dinner - repairs muscle
cardio exercise 4-6 times a week for 30-50min, light weight training
dont consume foods that are made of white flour (white bread, cakes, past etc.), sugar loaded foods (cookies, icecream, candy etc) and nothing fried, oily.
ofcourse you can spoil yourself once in a while with a little treat:)
dont try it - stick to it and follow every day.
