I have a husky/german shepherd dog who tends to run off when let off the lead. He was an abandoned dog and is very nervous of traffic, etc.

the husky has a very strong pray drive therefore should not be let off the lead, so with that it might be better to keep him on an extendable lead so you know he will be safe.
The german shepherd dog is loyal & both dogs are highly trainable, but I still think it is wise to keep on a lead till you train the dog to come on command.

I am in Cumbria so I dont know & have not found any walks on the net for your area sorry.

Nicole is right; better to keep your dog on a lead if he is nervous of traffic and at risk of running off into the road. I live right in your borough (between Hampstead and Swiss Cottage) and I am breaking my head at what to suggest as the best place to exercise your dog. The heath is so vast, you'd be OK if you used a good flexi-lead. What ever you do, DON'T let him loose on Hampstead Heath; the surrounding roads are treacherous. Your best bet would be Primrose Hill or Regents Park. Again, Primrose Hill has traffic on all sides so it's the flexi-lead again, I'm afraid.

Living in a built-up busy area like Camden, you are in the same predicament as I am. My two little dogs have nowhere to run loose because it just isn't an option for us. Other than finding someone with a large secure garden to let them run about in, they will always remain on leads and totally under control.

Perhaps you should wait until you are 100% sure it is safe to let your dog run free. I know the temptation must be there but the risks are too great in this area.
