when he has to think too hard.
Ex:
If something is rather trying for him in class and he puts a tremendous amount of effort into it he starts feeling dizzy and his head begins to hurt.

Why would this happen?

Before I get any more "glasses" answers, my son does not need them. He gets checked every 6 months w/his brothers and is the only one w/perfect vision. Thank you anyway for that particular idea.

Maybe he is using this as an excuse. Maybe he really isn't understanding and this is the best way to get out of it. Some kids will translate their inability to understand something into a somatic symptom. Best way to figure that out is to pay attention to when he complains of dizzyness or headaches. Is it during one specific subject or all of them, during a certain time of day or all day. Keep a log for one week about this and bring that to your doctor. It will make it much easier to diagnose the real problem.

The other thing, if he is young (say under 9) he may be holding his breath while intensely in thought. In other words, he might take half as many breaths because he is so intently focused on his work. The same could be true with blinking (although I don't think this would make him dizzy), he may not be blinking when staring at a page.

It may be that he needs a different way to study or even learn. There are different ways that some people learn: listening, hands on, and some can just read something and have it. Maybe he needs a different approach to how he can get the concept of what it is he is trying to learn. Break up the routine, move around the room, take a visual break, look at a nice picture, then go back to the lesson. I used to tudor a woman who couldn't get conceptsin the written form, so I had to break things down with either a handdrawing, or put it into eveyday terms so she could wrap her mind around it. She graduated from University Of Michigan's Nursing program. Find a way that works for him, and get his teacher involved, it may take some extra time, and involvement, but I'm sure you don't want him discouraged from learning.

My 15 yr old daughter has been experiencing headaches in school also...the nurse checked her blood sugar and it was really low. She was refusing to eat breakfast in the AM and was getting headaches and dizzy before lunch. Now she eats every morning and she is fine until later in the day when her sugar drops again and she needs to eat again. This is just a thought. Definitely take him to the doc and check him out! Blessings!

Because he is feeling a whole lot of stress. Please take him to the dr. asap, and get this properly diagnosed, it could be need for glasses, migraine headaches, or something else wrong health wise. Is there diabetes or hypoglycemia in your family? Migraine headaches are hereditary too. If you don't like the "simple" reasons why the pediatrican is saying, maybe take your son to a family practioner. It needs to be fou nd out what the cause is, and see wht can be / should be done to help him. Take care.

Maybe he is struggling because he needs glasses and it's not so much "stress" as a lack of interpretation. Tension headaches between the eyes and dizziness sometimes indicate this. Has he had his eyes checked lately?
Good Luck.

I would ask him about the anxiety and if you feel that is not the issue I would discuss this with his pediatrician as there could be other biological issues. Is there a certain position he assumes for thinking (head bowed for example)? Perhaps he needs a physical or a trip to a neurologist. Best of luck as you search for the cause and cure.

It sounds to me like anxiety You should have him checked out. headaches and dizziness are one of the first signs of anxiety.

The sooner you start treatment, the less problem he will have with it. Stress is the biggest trigger for anxiety attacks.

get him into see a counselor, they will run a series of tests to determine weather or not it is anxiety. they will give him tips on how to control it or to at least minimize it.

Good luck to you and I hope that every thing works out good for your son.

Is he off balance, tripping? My friends son had those symptoms. They did a mri said it was fine, went in for a routine eye exam and the eye doctor saw a tumor! That got the ball rolling! They got him up to Phoenix and had surgery, now he is doing fine. Recovering more and more with time. Not saying that this is what is wrong with your son, but keep trying and get him in to a neurologist sooner than August!

Could possibly be panic attacks because he is stressing out. That is all I can think of. When my son got panic attacks he got headaches and dizzy. I would definately set up an appt. with the pediatrician just incase it might be something medical.
