i've heard several close atheist friends of mine say that they aren't the "militant" type of atheist that wants to destroy all world religion, ban christmas, take god out of the pledge and off our money and all that other junk...but some clearly are that way. so, what are your goals as an atheist? are you looking for respect from christians and will be satisfied with that, or are you trying to bring down christianity and all forms of religion?

zero, i realize there is no "established" goal, so i was asking atheists, on an individual level, what their goals were.

ok, why does everyone keep saying that atheism has no central goals? yes, i get this. i said that i get this. i'm asking on a personal level, what do YOU...personally, as an individual atheist...in YOUR own mind...individually, have in mind as a goal? do you want to bring down religion, just live in peace with the respect of christians, etc. get it? i understand that everyone won't have the same answer. wow!

My goals are to lead a decent life; help those around me I can help; be loved; to keep learning; be missed when I have died; be re-incarnated.

What are your goals?

I for one would be happy for respect. I don't see anything wrong with religion per say. If it helps thru life that's fine. My goals are to live life to the best of my ability. Love my family and friends and be the best person I can be. I believe in taking god out of the pledge and off money only because it ignores people of other faiths and thoughts. I don't know any atheist that want to ban Christmas as that was original a pagan holiday, the winter solstice and you can practice it whatever way you want.

have you seen the Meaning of Life?
"Well, it's nothing very special. Uh, try and be nice to people, avoid eating fat, read a good book every now and then, get some walking in, and try and live together in peace and harmony with people of all creeds and nations. And, finally, here are some completely gratuitous pictures of penises to annoy the censors and to hopefully spark some sort of controversy, which, it seems, the only way, these days, to get the jaded, video-sated public off their ******* arses and back in the sodding cinema. Family entertainment, bollocks! What they want is filth! People doing things to each other with chainsaws during Tupperware parties. Babysitters being stabbed with knitting needles by gay presidential candidates. Vigilante groups strangling chickens, armed bands of theatre critics exterminating mutant goats… Where's the fun in pictures? Oh, well, there we are. Here's the theme music. Goodnight."

especially about the mutant goats part

That varies with each one of us. We aren't actually a group, we don't hold meeting, and we don't have an authority. So there is no way that we are going to have the same gaols.

I am somewhere between the two. I do want religion totally out of government and that includes money and the pledge. Those last two aren't huge issues for me, but I do think they are a symptom of the problem I see. I want its power knocked down to the point that it isn't a threat. But I wouldn't ban anyone from freely exercising their faith or ban Christmas or any such thing.

Heck, I like Christmas. Most of us seem to.

Atheism itself doesnt give you some goals like most religions. so if an Atheist is trying to ban the christmas that is his peronal view and has really nothing to do with Atheism.

My goal is to co-exist with other people. I don't have any problem with christmas, and religions as long as they have no problem with others and specially atheists.
Bringing down other religions is what most relgious people do, but when I am debating with a religous person, I just try to make him look and think about his believes again with more wisdom.
I dont scare people from fire of hell, death, being killed, beheaded or whatever, I just ask them to think it through with their own logic.

"Militant athiests" don't have goals to destroy all world religion (that's usually the job of one entire religion), ban Christmas (???), take God out of the pledge and money (that's usually the job of liberals wanting to seperate church and state.).

I am happy with my life, with or without anyone approval. I'm sad that religion and ignorance consumes a large portion of the anger, fear, and hatred in the world today. My goal is to make this world a better place in any way possible.

Atheism and "all atheists" don't have a goal. Atheism is simply a lack of belief in the existence of gods. After that, it's up to the individual what they do and what their goals are. There's no unified world view or intention inherent in atheism.

My goals, personally, are to raise my son, keep myself relatively healthy, discover truths wherever they exist and whatever they may reveal, and generally enjoy myself while I can.

I'm just looking to get complete separation of church and state. So I'm not out to destroy religion or ban christmas, but I am out to get god back out of the pledge (it was just fine when my grandparents were growing up, before god was put into it), and off the money.

My goals are to enjoy the life I know I have, instead of worrying about things that I have no way of proving and no way of controlling. I don't have issues with Christians or anybody believing what they want, but some religious beliefs just make their followers so fearful, guilty and extremist it makes me feel like they can't enjoy their lives to the fullest. Why would anybody choose to do that?

I'm an Atheist and my goals don't have anything to do with religion because I couldn't care less about it- that's why I am an Atheist. My goals are to live a decent , happy life.

Hmm, I think the "Atheists" you are refering to are really Christians v2.0

Christians believe all gods but theirs are false gods and deserve no heeding. Some others just extending this attitude futher to include ALL gods, a natural progression. These are evolved Christians not Atheists, True AtheistsTM would view either as intolerant and narrowminded.
