Overall Gunsmoke.. A little more realism. Matt Dillon was COOL!

Gunsmoke was better because it had the wider range of characters--male,female, educated, uneducated, tolerant and intolerant--and it made sense for everyone to be in town. In Bonanza you had rich daddy and spoiled sons dealing with con artists or ranch hands that just happened to be trespassing on the Ponderosa or hanging out at the local bar. Gunsmoke could have love interest without the person dying (Bonanza should have handed out the red shirts from Star Trek to every young woman that met the Cartwrights) and had friends caring about friends.

Both were good shows, but I have to say gunsmoke was the better! It just had better story lines and more depth! Bonanza was sort of a flasher version of what hollywood wanted the cowboys to be! Also Bonanza was directed at the then younger generation.

Definately GUNSMOKE, the longest running tv show ever! It started as a 30 minute radio show. Then a 30 minute tv show. Then a one hour tv show. Ran from the 50s to the 80s, I believe. It even spawned 'Burt Reynolds' as a pin-up star! LOL! But, in all honesty, 'Little House On The Praire' kicked both their GRASSES! ;-)

Gunsmoke had Ms Kitty. Wasn't she a hooker or pimp? More progressive tv for the time. Grampa watched the reruns so I had to too
