If we as a society had the brains and the courage to let them do their jobs to completion, their deaths wouldn't have been in vain in either case.
to DrB. Thank you for your service. But those 58,000 men did die for nothing. They were all heros, as well as yourself. We, the American people let you down. That's the way it went down in the history books. You fought and your fellow soldiers gave their lives fighting a leftist ideology that 40 years later 50% of Americans think would be a swell idea if we implemented it here.
The American people learned nothing from the lesson of Vietnam. We are repeating the same mistake. We elect fools to congress that insist on micromanaging the war, and calling for defeat.

No, I don’t think the American people, collectively, need to apologize to our troops, because not all of the American people were supportive of the Iraq fiasco and our plan of attack in Afghanistan. I for one can stand up straight and hold my head high and state that I was emphatically against our incursion and occupation of Iraq from the very start.
The ones who should recite your apology are those neoconservative politicians, and grassroots supporters, who encouraged our Congress to go head long into a war that was rationalized under false pretenses, and was ill conceived and poorly planned for. Of course what can an apology do to mend the broken hearts of our servicemen and women? What can mere rhetoric do? Can it bring back our dead? Does it have the capacity to grow back a limb blown away by an IED?
The answer to all these questions is a resounding and lamentable no. The most we can do for our service men and women is bring justice to them. Have the politicians and strategists, who seduced the American people to fall for this war, prosecuted. Secondly, we must set up measure to amend the Constitution, so that the President has very little if any powers to declare war. That must be decided by the Congress alone, with little influence from the executive branch. The lives our men and women are far too precious to be left to the discretion of one man; let alone an imbecilic one such as Bush.

Millions of our American soldiers have died since the birth of this nation. Show respect to them and the choices they made to become a soldier - although all of them didn't make that choice independently, those who take on the responsibility of becoming a soldier know the risks involved - death is one of them, and that's a choice they were willing to make. They didn't die for nothing. How can you say that when most of them always dreamed about becoming an American soldier as a child?
They die for nothing when fellow Americans that turn away act like what they're doing is a lost cause and show no patriotism.

... and when people die for our nation, we used to take the land and make life better for the inhabitants. Iraq should become the 51st state in our nation. We can help the Iraqi's with economic development. We can have a very strategic place in the world for the protection of our nation as well as the world. We would solve the energy needs of the industrialized nations for many years to come. And one last thing, we won't be stranding our soldiers as the Congress and President seem to be doing. We should not EVER have Americans die for nothing.

They only die for nothing if we walk away and leave Iraq a failure. It doesn't have to be that way, if the American people would just support the effort. When you don't then you give politicians the political cover to harm the effort. The American people who don't support should be ashamed of themselves and recognize that while they may be getting what they want, they are also the reason this fails, if it does. Worthless people like you make me sick.

first of all there is no soldier that has ever died for nothing. in any war. every soldier that has died has died for a reason. they have died keeping you, your family, friends, everyone safe. the ones that are dying now, are keeping children and women safe and alive. and making their lives a little better to live. to me thats a reason, and thats something.

America has nothing to say sorry for!!! You should be saying sorry to each and every solider, sailor, marine, airforceman, and coast guardsman that comes home for your blatant disregard for the American way either go to Iraq and see what it is all about or keep your mouth shut.

I think you should mourn the soldiers that have died and pray for their souls and their families. But I think they are dieing for a Fundamentalist Christian ideal that is going to destroy us all.
