Doesn't he know us better than we know ourselves?

God knows everything--and often times He has answered my prayers before I even asked or thought to ask, because He's just that awesome and Loving. But, God does not force Himself of us--He gave us the great gift of "Free Will". Often, people who need things--dont even want what they need. Like drug addicts who need help, but they dont want it--so God may show them signs and send people to help, but if they reject it, thats their choice.

Many times, God does not give us what we "want", He gives what we "need". Look back to your life and think of all the things you "wanted" in the past 15 years? Did you get everything? And, arent you glad you didnt get many of those things? Its because God Knows Best, and He knows what is best for our lives.

Yes, God already knows what we need, and what we don't need. However, he wants to hear from us. Prayer is our communication to him, and we can go to God whenever, wherever, and for whatever reason we need to. A strong prayer life is important in being a Christian because staying close to the Lord is the best way to be. God may not always answer our prayers the way we want, and he may not give us all we pray for, but he gives an answer anyway. It may be no, or not right now......Prayer also keeps us humble. When we ask God to help, we know that we can't handle it ourselves. If we didn't go to God for everything, we would try to handle everything on our own, and it would turn into a big mess. Sometimes it takes a while for our prayers to be answered, but God's timing is always perfect. He will never put more on us than we can handle, and he always listens to our prayers, our cries for help, and our words of praise as well!!

That's actually a very good question. There are a number of answers.

1. Of course G-d knows what we want, but he wants to hear it from us, just like a father who knows what his son will ask for, but he still wants him to ask, because it then makes the giving more special in his son's eyes. So too by us, if we pray for something and then receive it, it's more special in our eyes (if we appreciate that it's from Him.)

2. We're praying to G-d, but for us. It's not for Him to hear our shopping list, but for us to grow closer to Him through communication.

3. There's an inherent fault in the question. You're assuming that all prayer is selfish "I want"s. That's not true. Prayer is also praising G-d for what he does for us already, and asking forgiveness for any sins we've committed. When you look at prayer like a (three times) daily meeting with the king, you look at it with a lot more respect than just the "gimme, gimme" mentality.

Hope this helps!

There are two supposed answers to this (well, actually three - two involving god).

1. Prayer isn't about what you want, it's about what god wants. He wants you to use the free will that he gave you (supposedly, anyways), and he wants you to dedicate some time out of your day to him.

2. Prayer, while it may be pointless, makes people feel better, and closer to god.

3. God doesn't exist, or doesn't care about us, or is some other deity that doesn't accept prayers.

Because God loves those who come to Him. And praying brings us closer to God. If God always gives us what we want without us going to him, we wouldn't really have a great relationship with God. God is willing to give us things and take care of us and be merciful to us, as long as we go to him.

I consider prayer to be a form of communication with god. When I pray it's me expressing my desires but also just conversing with my Heavenly Father.

another non believer?dont ask stupid question! We need to pray so that God can give us what we want!If we need something we should ask. Let me give you an example, when you want new clothe you ask your parent to buy for you, When you need money you ask your parents. When you realize that you parent is cheap head.. you pray to god, so that god can open your parents heart to give you money. It simple if you dont ask you dont get it!God know you wanted a baby, but when you want have a baby is it up to you to ask!Understand?Duh!!!!!!

There is power in prayer or meditation or whatever you want to call it. It cycles our internal energy and if done right also can connect outside ourselves. I don't personally see that there is a deity involved in this.

Do you talk to your best friend and tell them your needs, wants, hopes and desires? I'm sure you do! This is what God wants from us also, he wants us to draw close to him, just as you would a best friend. Psalms 145:18,19 says "God is near to all those calling upon him, to all those who call upon him in trueness. The desire of those fearing him he will perform, and their cry for help he will hear." Just think of what that means! The almighty Creator is near to us and will hear us if we "call upon him in trueness." What a privilege we have to approach God in prayer. Also, by persevering in prayer, asking for things more than once, it shows to God that our desire is very deep and that our faith is genuine.
