I wouldn't worry about it. As long as you don't put anything in the bottle that might harm his teeth, and that _you_ don't mind giving it to him (never mind what other people say or think), it's fine.
If he's still using it by the time he's ready for night-time potty training, you might have a problem. But you still have at least a year or two to worry about it. Most kids wear diapers to bed until they're around 3, some much longer. He's likely to have grown bored with it by then.

It's fine... I think doctors and other people just say to take it away because society sees it as unacceptable. My son drank out of his bottle until he was about 2 3/4 years old... The only reason they say not to give a bottle is because most of the time there is milk in it and the sugars can sit on the teeth and cause them to rot (my son drank milk out of his at bedtime until after 2 years because he would NOT accept anything else)... Water is fine... and don't worry about the bottle. It's probably just a security object for him and when he's ready he will give it up on his own. My son can't talk but I would show him a picture of a cup and bottle at bedtime and one night he finally picked the cup (which he had been using during the day) and after that it's all he's wanted... Don't worry about it... there is nothing wrong with it.

It is generally acknowledged that bottle and pacifier use discontinued by age two (and some say three) will have minimal impact on tooth and jaw. You should also know that while bottles (and pacifiers) are carefully developed in association with dentists to have minimal impact sippy cups are not. Sippy cups are supposed to be a very short term intermediary step.
There is an increase in ear infections associated with bottles due to suction caused by suckling on a bottle, but you need to assess that risk in your particular child for yourself.
He may give it up, you may have to take it away. It depends on the child. Realistically though breastfeeding mothers are told by the American Academy of Family Physicians, WHO, and many other health organizations that breastfeeding should continue until at least age two. Weaning before age two carries risks to both mother and child[1]. Obviously if humans are meant to breastfeed until age two (and more likely 3-5 years of age[2] they would have a relatively strong instinct to suck throughout that time.
So you have to weigh the risks and benefits to your child and do what is right for him. Ignore all the "rules" they are contradictory anyway.

You have to take it away now. He doesn't need a bottle to go to bed on. If he wants water offer it in the cup, if he doesn't take the cup don't offer the bottle.

Whoa your problem here is that you are using sippy cups. There are numerous reasons why you shouldn't use sippy cups but the most important reason is because it promotes tooth decay, sugary drinks such as juice are put into sippy cups often and children are sipping this for hours, which can decay teeth at a fast rate. introduce your son to the glass, it is more healthy, and it is more mature, even for an 18 month old.

the bottle needs to be taken or it will damage his teeth (even if it's water it will still cause his teeth to be misformed)
get him a soft sippy and see if that works if not then just let him cry that's all you can do without having to pay 1000s of dollars on braces later
