This is sort of a silly question, but oh well.
We were on a fieldtrip in Orlando, Florida and we were playing truth or dare. We were talking on the hotel phones room to room and the guys asked me, "Do you dig Alex?"
I just want to know what that means, exactly. I mean, I know it means that they were asking if I like him more than a friend. But why do guys always say 'dig'? Is it just their way of asking if I had a crush on him?

Well, I guess you can say I'm a tad bit immature for playing truth or dare, but dude, we're in the 8th grade and we're 14 and 15 years old. But thanks for everyone's answers. I'm not stupid, so please don't assume that I am. But, as I said, I'm pretty sure they were just trying to make it sound cooler. Haha, I dunno, but thanks for everyone's input. :]

Yes dig just means like alot. But why do guys say it? Well the world dig was given to us in the 70's and well new none meanings words were the thing back then. And well alot of (Cool) people used the word dig at that time so it just kind of went down to generations. Its a word to say if your cool. or if you think your cool.

I suppose so, but you could even "try too hard" to write a good country tune. If you don't truly know how to make a good country tune, you are bound to write cliches in order to pump one out. Same thing goes for prog or other "complex" music (Dream Theater really is filled with "prog cliches"). I'm thinking now that "technical" is perhaps an inherently negative term, as it implies bands that are just "technically" crafting music, "going through the motions", if you will. This doesn't necessarily mean it has to be very complex, but is likely immaculately played and very cliche... basically I don't think the term has much use, actually. A) Dream Theater (all too often), and pretty much every "tech/neo-classical metal" band strikes me as music school sportsmanship. B) I don't think one can say that these bands "don't try hard enough" because who knows if they're *trying* to be anything in particular... but as for bands that get mislabeled prog... Muse, Radiohead, any "post rock" bands... well, anyway, depends on your definition of prog. C) Any of these, at their best, very adequately pull off "progressive tendencies" in music: King Crimson, Genesis, Yes, ELP, Jethro Tull, Pink Floyd, Camel, Transatlantic, Porcupine Tree etc. BQ: It was the Neo-Classical Tech-Metal in 9/8 to Erowid's aimless, nondescript Psych jams... my Q&A's might be like an ELO song; I get my point across but sometimes at the expense of soul and endearing mistakes. @Gesm: Van der Graaf is more... "emotive" than GG but has far more "wankery" too. GG never set out to be all that resonant, but imo they achieve their purposes more adequately than VDGG, by and large.

I don't know, i think it sounds stupid. I guess it really depends on the guys age. I rarely ever hear young adults between the ages of 20 through 30 say "dig".

Truth or Dare? Come on, grow up a little. The fact your asking about the meaning of "dig" shows your imaturity. Yeah, I think that's what he meant. "Do you like him more than a friend?" or maybe even deeper, "Would you have sex with him?" Not being gross or nothin, just putting it bluntly.

I don't know where the roots are but i guess if you look at it literally if you dig into something your deeper into to it. I'm not sure it just means that a guy likes a girl simply put.

No, it doesn't specifically refer to crushes, it's just a word for like. Like "Dude I totally dig your car!" or "I could really dig some taco bell right now" Where it's roots are, i don't know, aside from it being mostly rooted in black jazz and blues circles. but its totally retro, which is why we like it!

Dig.
Meanings he would like to go into a "deeper" relationship with her. "Digging deeper".
Hhaha.
Personally- its a stupid term.
My friends just say,
"yeahh she is tight, yeah she's fresh, yeah she's off the chain".
And I am a girl, so I guess we'll never understand boy lingo.

Because if you go out with him, eventually you'll want to dig your way out. HAHAHA
No, maybe it's there way of avoiding saying something girly. Guys aren't like that. When they like someone they act differently. Not the OMG, she is so cute, I so want to go out with her. It more like, WOW, that chick is banging, and I would like to bang bang bang.....you know. lol
