Learning languages and being able to speak them is wonderful and fun because it opens you up to a whole other realm of opportunities and new incite too. I speak English & Spanish fluently (native tongues) I also know some Italian, French, and American Sign Language... enough to get by and defend myself in a conversation and can also understand it if heard in songs, movies or reading it. I find that my world is much larger because of it.. I can get more out of it and contribute more back also. Therfore, on a personal note- what I know is never enough so I'd love to find more ways to keep practicing what I do know-improve and pick up whatever else I can on the way. Does knowing languages make you more confident? I think so for all that was already said- confidence I think is linked the strongest with character if you are outgoing and all then confidence is natural to you. As human beings- that we are-- one of our fundamental needs as members of a society and larger world is to communicate and the way that is most prevalent/common is language. Language brings people together but in the same way can also separate. Just serving as an interpreter sometimes or being in the right place at the right time can be really rewarding.. and things like that- experiences can build confidence. Not having the language as a barrier but as a bridge is a life lived with less limitations. It must be really hard to be in a place where no one understands you and you are not able to communicate- so just having that feeling of powerlessness when you don't speak the language it must be horrible for one's confidence. I've never been in that situation when i would imagine that in your head it was just completely blank.. and just had no clue. Then there is the business world where the more you know the better- when you are bilingual you are worth 2 people.. so yeah, GO polygots!! I envy you-- in a good way.. jk.. you're cool.

My mother tongue is Russian and the only one foreign language I speak more or less fluently is English. I understand French but I don't speak it. I used to study Latin and Old Irish, so I think I'll be able to read a text written in any of these languages if I have to (and if I have a dicitionary, of course!). I can say 'hi, how are you and thank you" in half a dozen of other languages, and I find it real fun.
Confidence? Well, I'm not sure... To certain extent, yes. On the other hand, I always feel that I know too little. It's annoying.

British English is my mother tongue. I have learnt French since quite a young age but only began to seriously study it over recent years. I started learning Spanish just over three years ago, along with Latin. I have looked into small bits of both Italian and Danish too.

I'm a very confident and outgoing person but I have been all my life: I don't think my language speaking has affected this in day to day life. However, when on holiday in countries where the languages I can use are spoken, I am more confident than the people around me who cannot, because I can understand what is going on around me and ask for help if necessary etc.

I speak English and Spanish.

I've always wanted to learn another language. The ability to communicate with different types of people can up a person's confidence level.

I grew up with english, learned french at the school, choose latin in high school, spanish in the college, chinese(kind of) from my friend and i am currently in the midst of learning arabic so i can communicate with my husbands family lol.

Yea i would say learning more languages makes you more confident, its nice to be able to talk to people in different countries, and to actually know what they are saying in another language. I like when i am in a mixed group of people and someone is talking to me in a different language and i can translate back and forth for them and for other people to join in on the conversation. I would say you should go for it and learn another language there is no harm in it and you might meet new people in result of it, and going on holiday just became alot easier and more interesting(specially now you can read/ask what the meals are or when the next bus is etc lol).

I love the study of languages but I have trouble getting them to stick!

Native language is American-English. 2 semesters of Spanish in HS. 2 semesters of American Sign Language in JC. Some French, some Latin, some Esperanto, some Yiddish, some German, some Japanese, some Choctaw, etc.

When I watch subtitled movies I read the text and hear the speaker's voice (tone) say the words even though I do not understand their actual language.

I only speak 3 languages. They are English, Tagalog and French (still learning on it).

Being bilingual can make you confident because you might use them at the right time (like being in a party with foreign guests) and if you want to release your anger, you can say what you feel, or swear in front of them. They won't even understand it.

I speak English as a first language.
I also speak Spanish fluently. I am also very comfortable in Portuguese, French, Hebrew, and Italian.
I don't know if knowing more languages gives you more confidence, but it definitely opens up a lot more opportunities. I don't remeber who said it but-
"When you learn another language, you gain another world."
