In a way, it can be construed as the new Pearl Harbor. It awoke the sleeping giant from its dilusions that these things can't happen here. The world has these sorts of things happening to it on a regular basis. Many of the atrocities that carry on in the world today are never spoken of on the news. We live in ethnocentric times where only our views matter. To us, it's a turning point in our history while to others, it was just another day.

Pearl Harbor was a military attack against a military target, It was meant to neutralize a target of strategic import. Had their diplomatic staff in Washington been aware of the time differences, it might have taken place after a formal declaration of war. The World Trade Center attack was an act of terror carried out against a non military target meant only to kill and cause chaos. No there are no similarities other than that they involved airplanes and were within U.S territory.

While terrible indeed, the World Trade Center attacks do not compare to Pearl Harbor, which was the act of a Nation-State and not a group of fanatics. One must also remember that Japan intended to declare war just prior to the attack (although that attempt failed). WTC was not an act of war in the strict sense as no Nation-State was directly involved.

in a way yes..... the world tade center attacks increased the public awareness in and the magnitude of the GWOT (global war on terror) in much the same way that Pearl Harbor caused America to enter WWII

in a way no..... we didn't enter the GWOT because the world trade center attacks and we aren't fighting a single country or unified group of nations as was the case in WWII

If you consider them attacks by groups trying to intimidate the USA that ultimately led to a dictator's downfall, then yes.

Well, it was an attack on our soil, as was Pearl Harbor, so it was sure similar.
