Once treatment for depression begins, you still have to manage on a day-to-day basis. Here are some guidelines:

See your doctor regularly. Your doctor can monitor your progress, provide support and encouragement, and adjust your medication if necessary.

Take your medications. Finding the best medication for you may take several tries. It may take several weeks for you to start seeing results. Once you feel better, continue to take your medication as prescribed.

Don't become isolated. Try to participate in normal activities.
Take care of yourself. Eat a healthy diet and get the right amount of sleep and exercise. Exercise can help treat some forms of depression, ease stress and help you relax.

Avoid alcohol and recreational drugs. Abuse of alcohol and drugs will slow or prevent your recovery.

Trust me I've been through depression before, it's hard. But before it possibly gets out of hand go to your parents or a school counselor to talk about it. Possibly, they may suggest seeing a counselor or therapist. This is a great way to get out your feelings and learn some coping mechanisms to make you feel better about what is going around you and yourself. Also, if you feel overwhelmed with your schoolwork try organizing all your notebooks and school materials. Then, sit at the kitchen or dining room table and lay out all your assignments and form a strategy to finish them. Having a parent help you with this is a great way to get that off your chest. And as for your friend, try and sit down with her and talk and see what the root of the problem is. Maybe share some of the feelings you've been having. If she is a true friend, she will understand. I hope i can help :]

Definitely talk to a trusted adult about it. If someone disregards your concerns, tell someone else again and again till someone listens. You are already doing the right thing by asking for advice and suggestions here. Don't be afraid to ask for help at home or at school if necessary. A guidance counselor at school is there for situations just like the one you are going through. Just tell a grown up that you need to talk to them about something IMPORTANT. That way they they can make some time to listen, and help. I have a 12 and a 9yr old. That's what I tell them to do if they really need to talk to me. By the way, if you can get yourself out of your room for just a few minutes...tell your Mom happy Mother's Day. She probably really needs to hear it from you hun. Hugs :)

Talk to your parents. If you don't feel comfortable talking with them, try your school's nurse or counselor, or maybe someone with your church if you attend one. You can also look under Mental Health in the yellow pages of the telephone book. The people on the help lines can guide you. You CAN get through this with a little help. Good luck.
