I have a great sounding recipe for seafood lasagna that calls for capers. I dont have any, and since I dont have any other recipes that call for them I am reluctant to go buy any. Any idea if they add much to a recipe? I have no idea what they even taste like!

they taste like salty, pickeled little caper buds.
don't worry about it...if you had some dill relish around you could sustitute it with that, but otherwise you won't miss much with a lasagna...

If you really wanted to try them, most supermarkets sell small quantities in the condiment/pickle isle. They last forever too, you don't have to really worry about them spoiling.

capers are a small round pickled bud from the nerstruim plant, originally from the mediterian...they have a unique flavor, that sometimes have an acquiired taste...that means you have to get used to them before you like them...somewhat like scotch whisky...capers are essential in such dishes as piccatas....without them they would not be authentic.
capers are found in the speciality food section of the grocery store...they come in a small bottle...so if you don't like them...it wouldn't be much waste...also they will keep for a long time in the refer...they are like pickles.
if unsure of liking capers...use only a third of the amount listed in the recipe...for i think they are wonderful...and will make this recipe authenic...capers and seafood are a ancient dish...try it and be opened minded with the results...it may open a new vista in your culinary experence

Capers add a tangy, peppery, lemony flavor to food. Personally, I love them, but like you, don't use them a whole lot. Their flavor in a seafood lasagna would probably really enhance the flavor.

I would suggest a substitute of some lemon pepper seasoning, and maybe some chopped green olives.

Capers just add a salty flavor to the food. I dont care for them and routinely remove them from recipes and ask for them to not be included in my meal at restaurants. Not using them wont destroy the meal or recipe. I say leave them out!

You can make it without. Capers a salty and taste a little like green olives so if you had olives you could chop some up to use instead, or just omit them which is what I would do.

You can leave out the capers. Many people don't like them and you wont miss them in the recipe.

If you don't know what they taste like, you won't miss them. Capers add a very distinctive flavoring. You ought to try them someday to see if you think they are palatable.
