A comment, more than an answer first. Being the #1 best sold book does not make it the #1 most read or understood book. Millions who have bought or been given (churches and religious groups are the #1 purchasers of Bibles (big shock there, so the statistic doesn't mean a whole heck of a lot), it have not read it and are content to accept what is taught to them in church (which never addresses the myriad of problems encountered by anyone who actually takes the time to read it and ask questions).
Now, regarding your answer, Christianity is a religion based upon (among others) the belief that the bible is in-errant so therefore everything it says must be true and faultless, so by definition it (Christianity) cannot be a myth. So the real question that should be asked here is 'When will it be accepted that the stories in the bible, the basis for all Christian beliefs, is largely a collection of myths?'
The only hope the world has is that someday people will stop blindly accepting the crap they are fed from birth (usually from their parents who were fed this crap before them ..and so on and so on), and start looking at religion and the texts they are based upon (note: I am not only targeting Christianity on this one) with a critical mind will they start asking the questions that beg to be asked and maybe even supplement with a little history and social studies to see what was going on in the world and what kind of people existed when most religious texts were written, will they begin to see for themselves that storytelling was very popular.
They will see how weak men got very powerful playing upon the supertitions and ignorance of the general populace (as they are still very powerful and influential today). Men that were willing to do anything and kill anyone that threatened that power (as many still do today, in the name of the almighty, of course). Maybe only then will they realize that religion and it text are no great mystery. The mystery is why people continue to allow themselves to be convinced so easily otherwise.

A lot of us don't. I agree with you, look at my profile. Note also that none of these theist are giving a real answer, we have stuff like "I'm better than you" and "Go to Hell" basically. That's great guys. What a bunch of egotistical morons. Some of these answers are scaring me. Why do you guys assume this is an atheist? Could be a Hindu sick of Christians calling their religion mythology when you're no better. Obama? Really? He's a religious nutbag just like the rest of them. No we're screwed cuz we never get a good choice.

Christianity as a myth. As I understand it, this fledgling religion began as a myth. But as for you being able to move those books, this is easily accomplished. Pick up the books in question off the shelf where they are now and manually move them to the desired location. SEE easy, no? Now let's move over to the dangerously thin ice and jump up and down, don't worry, you float. The concept of Christianity is one that has a foothold strongly etched in the Human psyche. It was through brute force that Witch was forced to move underground where even today it flourishes. To make Christianity a myth, this is also easily accomplished. You must UNLEARN GOD! Think and talk amongst yourselves should you not understand. IMHO.

Christianity IS based off of mythology. The Bible is an interpreted story unverified by history. Therefor it is mythology.

You know, as a Christian I have no problem at all with atheists. One of my best friends is an Atheist. Of course, my atheist friend has no problem with me being a christian either. In fact he tells me all the time, that I am what a christian should be: tolerant, accepting, honest, and kind. In other words, full of love.
Please don't lump all Christians into one mold, I don't do that to you. Spirituality is a very personal thing. I do not trivialize your way of life and belief system, so don't trivialize mine

A myth is the articulation of a given truth in narrative form using symbol and metaphor. Inasmuch as one accepts this definition of mythology, much of Christianity can already be considered to be "mythic" in its understanding of the world. For further insight into the relationship of another understanding of what a myth is to Christianity read Rene Girard's "The Scapegoat" or "Violence and the Sacred"-- his insights might surprise you.

Unless you find some way of fictionalizing the truth so that beleivers feel warm and fuzzy about it, religion will continue to frustrate logical thinkers for many more centuries to come. And it will continue to claim lives faster than cancer and heart disease because no one can let someone else have thier own faith--if it contradicts their own, it makes them think about it. If it makes them think about it, they just might start using logic. If they start using logic while examining religion, the whole thing falls apart and they're left confused about some painful subjects: The meaning of life (who says there IS one?), finding a purpose, feeling loved, having direction. That's why they refuse to listen to scientists who debunk their precious comfort blanket. Hey, being a part of a fairy tale, to these guys, beats actually having to think!
However sickening it may be, chances are you won't be re-arranging your bookstore anytime soon. Nor will your children, should you pass the business down to them.

when the 80% or so (don't know the actual number) people in this country that believe in it, some really committed and others twice a year, but when that number becomes 18%, you'll be there. The real question is why is it that so many could be so wrong? and why is it that only the intelligentsia get it?
