Kittens will be kittens! No, it's not because they are hungry, it's because they are curious. They like to lick and taste all kinds of different surfaces. It's part of their learning process. Plus cat litter moves and they want to play with it.
Do NOT use clumping litter until they stop trying to eat it. You see what happens to the clumping litter when it gets wet? It will do that in their mouths and stomachs. And you can end up with problems.
It's best to use clay litter (the old fashioned kind) until they get bigger, or realize that litter is not to eat.
Do not punish them for it. They will then learn to associate punishment with the litterbox and they won't use it, then you WILL have problems! If you see them doing it, just take them out, wipe the litter off their mouth, and divert their attention to something else, like playing with a string or something.
I've always had cats and NEVER once have I had an adult cat eat litter. It just part of the kitten stage. Just like a human baby will try to put everything in it's mouth.

Another possibility may be iron deficiency related anemia. Often, cats with low red blood cell counts will eat litter because most have clay in it. For some reason, the cats will eat it to try to fill their low levels of Iron. Your vet can do a simple blood test to check this. Good luck!

First you say you smack them, why? they must be lacking something in their diet. Check with your vet to make sure that they are getting the right amount of nutrition in their food. Eating litter may be harmful, it's not made for eating, I've never heard of cats eating litter, but please don't smack them, they don't know why you're being mean to them.

They should not eat it! But it's not their fault if they do, some cat litters contain substances that they like. Change the type litter you use and buy another one immediately.
