There used to be some resealable bags for storing veggies - the bags had lots of little holes. Those worked ok, but I can't find them anymore. What I do now is put just about any fresh veggie in a resealable plastic bag (like Ziplock) along with a couple of lightly-moistened paper towels (plain white ones, ideally). The towels help to absorb any excess moisture, and to re-release it as the veggies dry out. This will let you get at least a few extra days out of your leafy salad mix. For things like carrots, cabbage, and celery, you'll get at least an extra week's storage in good condition.

Take it out of the bag and place it in a bowl, (like tupperware) with a lid. Dampen a paper towel and place it on top of the greens on the second day. Make sure to check the moisture levels, you don't want it too wet. That should keep it for a few days longer than without.

Don't buy the lettuce in the bag!!!! It is not as fresh as buying head of various lettuce types. I buy several kinds of lettuce and put them in my veggie keeper. It only takes minutes to break or cut them up for a salad and they can stay fresh and crisp for seven to ten days. I do spinach for my salad as well as all kinds of raw veggies, too.

You can mix up the salad a day or two ahead of time in a container that you put in the same crisper. Just make sure the crisper is set for the lowest moisture level.

for a head of lettuce--take off plastic wrap and store in the icebox drawer in a paper bag.
for a sack of lettuce, get rid of the sack and store the lettuce in a plastic tupperware-type box or bowl in the icebox drawer.

Both should last a lot longer....

Grab from the very back of the shelf. It tends to be the freshest and I keep mine in the veggie drawer of the fridge.
