well i got pulled over because the cop could not see my license plate....lame huh? and i had it just was bent back into the grill so he went on and asked for insurance, and shame on me i dint have it :( (i know, i know..) that was my fault and i saw the ticket coming for that, but not for the muffle is just an after market muffler, and its so obvious that there are cars and trucks out on this same town that are as loud or even more, so they took the car and im concerned about the wrecking or damaging the car when they towed it(car has a body kit and new paint job), IF thats the case who is to blame? and should i do something about the fee for the muffler? and what would be a good statement.

i also need insurance now and am 20 yrs old, its really expensive everywhere i looked.

Noise pollution is very real. I am really annoyed by cars and especially motorcycles (Harleys) that are especially loud.

Many of us do not want to listen to your loud vehicle, be it the muffler, stereo, or whatever. How would you like it if I drove up with my beefed up car stereo blasting opera right next to you???

Have a little consideration for others and have a real muffler that quiets the car put on.

When putting on mufflers, the headlights that are not stock for your car, and other auto enhancers, you must read the box it is sold in. Many will say, not legal for street use, so that means, if you change out the exhaust system, say on a Honda, that is slammed to the ground, you will be ticketed for excess noise, and the police seem bent on getting the kids that are under 25, that have added aftermarket items to their cars. Side lights, as well will get you a ticket, if your state requires amber side lights, and you change them to clear, yep, here's another ticket. The tow company will do what is necessary to remove the vehicle, they will not mess up the transmission or body on purpose. You will want to get the car out of impound quickly, the daily fees for storage are high. Plan on your insurance rates being super high until you are 25, if you are male. The type of car will determine rates, as well as your driving record, where you live, your grades if you are in school, and many other issues. Did you know that tinted license plate covers are illegal? How many cars do you see those on? Do you know why, it's because the tinting causes the plate to lose it's reflective quality, and law enforcement needs to be able to see a car in the dark, from a distance. It's a regulation set up by law enforcement, and the licensing agencies must cooperate with those laws.

As I see it, you've drawn three strikes: license plate violation, insurance and muffler. Now you've got the nerve to complain about the officer doing his job?

The reason for the plate violation is, admittedly, lame. However it is a legitimate complaint (the police use it all the time here in Texas as an excuse to nail drug dealers! The license plate and defective brake lights are the most common reasons for stopping and making arrests.)

The insurance - well, you know who's to blame for that, right?

The muffler may also be a technical violation (you MIGHT be able to request a loudness test, using a decibel meter) in order to beat that one, but don't count on it.

As far as damage from towing - again, you're SOL as there's no way you'll ever be able to prove that the damage wasn't pre=existing.

Just pay the fines, get insurance and then go to the impound yard and retrieve your car (make sure you have enough cash to get it out of the yard, and the cost of towing besides).

I wouldn't complain because as I see it, you broke the law and now you've got to pay the consequences. "If you can't do the time, don't do the crime." (Baretta)

1. plate must be visible, it is the law.
2. your fault for no insurance, so if any damage due to towing, it is your fault. not their fault your didn't follow the laws nor their fault you added items to a car that might be damaged.
3. noise pollution is a law. loud radio, loud muffler are both considered noise pollution.
4. most likely, since you had no insurance and got caught, you will now need SR-22 insurance. it is normally twice the cost of normal insurance. it is for people like yourself that don't follow the rules. Progressive, Geico is bout only places really now for insurance, if they will even give it.
5. spend money on being proper, legal, not on dress up kits, mufflers, etc. you learned a lesson here, frills after the bills.
6. hate to say it, but you dug this hole yourself and you will pay for it for at least 3 yrs. so might as well get use to the high prices. might even have to sell the car and get a basic car just to afford the new insurance.

welcome to life, there are rules.

There are trucks around here with V8 Engines and no mufflers, so you can imagine how loud that is. That's kind of bogus that the cop towed you for excessive muffler noise. It's not common, but if the cop's in a bad mood, they CAN hit you for that (there is a law..it's just not enforced often anymore...) Still, that's not grounds for towing, at least I shouldn't think. If they damage it, it's the towing company's fault...

first of all, get insurance. my god, as if there arent already enough people without it. also, its going to be expensive. get over it. male, 20 years old. yeah, way expensive. second, there are noise laws. why do you have a special loud muffler? do you really think its cool, or something? body kit and paint, fine. but seriously, no one but you wants to hear your car. and also, a hint. the officer probably didnt really care about the plates. thats how police search for people without insurance, or people with warrants. its just a reason to pull you over. thats how it works.

27153. No motor vehicle shall be operated in a manner resulting in the escape of excessive smoke, flame, gas, oil, or fuel residue. The provisions of this section apply to motor vehicles of the United States or its agencies, to the extent authorized by federal law.

Adequate Muffler Required
27150. (a) Every motor vehicle subject to registration shall at all times be equipped with an adequate muffler in constant operation and properly maintained to prevent any excessive or unusual noise, and no muffler or exhaust system shall be equipped with a cutout, bypass, or similar device.
----------
That happens to be specific to California, but other states have similar laws.

The generally won't stop you just for muffler, unless it's excessive, but once they have you stopped that, along with "no seat belt" will become an ad on to the ticket.

Legally (big word, isn't it?) the cop is right. You can get a ticket for just about anything that is not right with your car. When the cop has to meet his/her quota and, if by chance, you are the unlucky one that day then bam!!! you pay.

Insurance..well, that is another matter. You shouldn't be driving without it. People who pay insurance pay for people like you. Be glad the cop didn't take your license away from you.

A ticket for a loud muffler is a chickenshit ticket in my opinion. Something a cop will nail you for when he didnt get his donut break and cant find anything esle wrong to give you a ticket for. But there is no excuse for you not having insurance. Yes, i know its expensive but if you want to play youve got to pay. And that insurance is for your own good. Picture yourself running into the back of a 40,000 dollar car and totalling it-you will wish then you had insurance.
Pay your tickets, and get yourself some insurance. Its worth the cost.
