PC Freezing up:

1.) check the event log
2.) check your system temperatures
3.) Remove PCI devices like a sound card or network card to a different slot. video card could be loose.
4.) Check system stability and Memory check
If the lock ups are only occurring in one application or game, reinstall it.
5.) do a chkdsk /f

video card was loose.

Sorry. It sounds like you have overloaded your RAM, need a Windows Repair, or both.

First, let's check the RAM. Go into SAFE MODE. (If you are not familiar with Safe Mode:

- Turn your PC on or Restart. As soon as you see the black and white screen, press and hold the F8 key. Continue holding until you see a black and white menu. Safe Mode is F3 or F5.

- Click Start, Settings, Control Panel, Add/Remove.
- click on anything you do not need on a daily basis, then click remove. (Games and graphics programs should be loaded on an as-needed basis because they use a lot of memory.)
- Restart and see if this helps.
(You may find your desktop icons out of place - just drag them back.)

If Windows loads, run a Disk Cleanup, Scandisk, and Defrag. This should be done every two weeks anyway.

If you still have problems, and even if you don't, it might be well for you to go for a Windows Repair.

When you are finished with all this, I suggest you set wallpaper and screensaver to blank or none. These, also, are graphics - constantly running in the background, consuming memory.
When it is finished, Restart.

Try booting into safe mode...keep hitting the F8 key as it's booting up and then use the arrow up & down key to select safe mode. In safe mode run your antivirus and spyware. Then shut down and power it back on.

BTW restore is a good idea but it won't help if you have a virus or spyware on your pc. So try to clean it first.

Boot it up in SafeMode (press F8 when booting up, and select SafeMode from menu). Once in SafeMode, you can go to System Tools and do a Restore. Usually restoring to a previous period when you remember the computer was working, will allow you to "fix" your computer. Good luck.
