Yes. This is common practice.

Yes, it's okay to go at a posh restaurant or not. Personally, I wait until the waiter comes back so I make sure he/she receives the tip. I always tip in person. I know a few people who have worked at restaurants and have heard stories about other employees taking tips off the tables that they didn't wait on. I always make sure that the waiter collects his/her well deserved tip.

Perhaps the tip wasnt collected because the waiter might have thougt it looked to grasping to swoop on it whilst you were in the restaurant or are you saying he didnt collect it because he deemed it to low . ?

It is the waiters responsibility-but maybe he's a newby!!! Haven't you ever started a new job before and not got the hang of it in the first couple of days? Don't dine and dash on the dude-that shows you have no patience or class!!! At least take care of your bill-and if you feel he doesn't deserve to be tipped don't leave one-maybe he will do better next time!!

No. It can be stolen and you could be held accountable for paying again. Call the waiter or waitress over to collect the bill. If they refuse to come, deduct the tip and take it to the cashier. If there is no cashier, rare, ask for the manager. Pay the manager and tell them why you are calling them over and not paying the tip.

Depends on the country, and the 'part of town' you are in.
If it is save to leave the money unguarded it is OK to walk away, if you are in a rougher part of town, or in a country where it is not common to leave the money on the table (Netherlands in busy places,) you hand it to a waiter.
If in doubt, take your time getting up, if it is not safe, the waiter will come soon to collect it, mostly before you have left.

If I choose to pay by cash, I wait for the server to come back, or go to the server. I have seen money being taken from a table (by other than servers) and this has taught me to be less trustfull of others.
You just never know about people.

Yes, they expect it, what does really hack me off in restaurants though is some of them add on a service charge, then leave a blank space on the bill for you to do it again.
Cheeky bleeders!

Well I will look around and find my waiter or waitress and if I can't find them I will grab someone who knows where they are and ask them to send them over. I like to make sure the right person gets the tip.

Yes, that is fine. On the way out if the waiter is in sight I might acknowledge him with a wave of my hand and a "thank you" or "good evening".

NO!! definitely not okay! please people stop doing this..i am a server and cannot tell you how many times i've had bus boys steal money off the table and i know this happens to a lot of my friends who serve at a number of places! wait til your server is in sight and give them a little nod or a wave as you get up so they can pick up the money when you leave before the busser gets to the table..
