Treacle is not from sugar based it it is from the sugar beet, molasses is a refined produce from the sugar making process, it is also used to make rum. Essentially it is made from sugar, and is the same or comparable to molasses.

Treacle is more an english thing, but I like both, it has a different edge to it, I prefer the unsulfured refined molasses. I use it in baking and BBQ sauce, my mother said she used it on pancakes back in the 1930's.
