I would deffinatly recommend a Great Dane! They are very gentle and just a big lap dog :] .. You need to feed them a GOOD quality of food. If you feed them a food like purina/iams they will eat about 6 cups a day since they are getting no nutritional value. If you feed a good quality dog food like Canidae .. you will only feed them about 4 cups a day. http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/greatdane.htm
Go through the Great Dane Referal, this is the best way to find a GOOD breeder:
Great Dane
Parent Club: Great Dane Club of America, Inc.
Breeder Referral: Nancy Lerch; CST (515) 259-9607
Breeder Directory: website
Regional Clubs: website
Parent Club: http://www.gdca.org/
Breeder Directory: http://www.gdca.org/breedermap.htm
Regional Clubs: http://www.gdca.org/gdclubs.htm
Make sure to do alot of research on them. Esp. on the proper way to feed them. Once you find a good breeder they will be able to help you out with any questions you have.
There is a GD down the street from me and the couple has 3 kids and the dog is great with them! I see them when I walk my dog playing in the backyard and the dog is gentle and watches over the kids. They are a great dog :]
Good luck!

I like everything about the breed:
they are intelligent, easy to train, loyal, love people
I recommend them only to people who are aware of how big they really get,are willing to train and socialize them, are willing to have a giant breed live in the house, are aware that somethings about them are more costly then a smaller breed would be and to anyone willing ot get one from a responsible breeder or responsible, ethical rescue.
In order to find a good breeder:
Go to the GDCA site and get a listing of breeders and also of Great Dane Clubs and contact them. Also attend shows and meet breeders there.
I also recommend the book The Great Dane Model of Nobility by Jull Swedlow. This is a wonderful book full of honest info on Danes, it is well written, easy to understand and has a wealth of information. It is also written by an extremely knowledgable Dane person.

Great Danes are cool, i personally like all dogs, but i prefer little dogs. I recommend it because great Danes, are great watch dogs, it will always be alert on what happening around them.Look on websites on finding Great Danes, you might want to check out how the breeder trains them and stuff to make sure they are a good breeder.

They are great dogs, they're very gentle and great with kids. When they're puppies they grow very very fast though and that makes them extremely clumsy so be careful around small children. I grew up with a dane from the time I was 4 until I was 18. Absolutely fantastic dogs overall...but they're kinda dumb. I would recommend them if you've owned and trained dogs before or if you've been around dogs a lot for a long time because they're tough to train because of them not being all that smart (they'll get it eventually just don't expect them to pick up on things right away). As far as finding a good breeder look online for some in the area and then interview them you can find interview questions online too, if they don't let you see BOTH parents and interact with them for a while WALK! You can also check with local vets and kennel clubs.

I got a great dane. I used to have two , but one passed away in January. I love great Danes, they are amazing , extreme companions. My black great dane would follow me every where no matter what. It was adorable! She was super nice, only a little reserved with strangers, but she even adopted every little pet we had ( a cat and another small dog) Well, I must tell you Great Danes are not that smart. Really.. they are not. Lol but they are amazing! Also you must get them used to walk around since they are puppies, because when they are big, its harder to walk them if they are not used.
Also Great Danes are a very delicate race. My black great dane was the sweetest dog ever, but it was very fragile, when it was eight years old she developed a cancer, and got paralyzed, and it wasn't a month later she died. She also had tons of sirgury, before, very delicate dog. Now, my blue great Dane has NEVER been sick. So, I guess it depends on the dog in general.
So, if you are going to have a great dane, be ready to face some costs and a short life span. But Great Danes are worth while, they are awesome , and fun companions, and make great watch dogs. They love kids, and are very patient. They are great dogs, amazing. Also.. they are a little yappy so train them not to do so. I had not =P

GR8 Danes are awesome....i had 2(mother and daughter) up untill last month when my oldest passed away...she was 11....they are known as "the gentle giants" for a reason...if your looking at getting one just because of size and hope to have a big mean dog, find something else...like a rottie or something. Danes love people and love being around people...they are real easy to train as long as you keep in mind that just cuz your pup is huge he/she is still a puppy....puppyhood lasts for around 18 months. make sure they have LOTS of room to romp and play.THey get along just fine with other dogs as well....i had a 1st b-day party for my litter and we had 10 danes in the same place all running around off-leash in a public park...no biting or fighting or anything...as far as finding a good breeder i would suggest asking around in your area...when i had pups i had people come from 7-10 hours away to get one...also make sure you can meet the parents...they are a good indication of how the pup will be...3 things to watch for ..or find out if parents have had trouble with are: Torsion,Bloat, and Hip Dysplasia ...hope that helps....and in response to "Andy".....BULL****!!!!...my Danes are VERY smart......a dog is only as smart as its training....

I like that Great Danes are usually calm. They also have this quirk where they put their head (their chin) on top of your head like while you are sitting down and they are next to you. Its like a hug or a claiming of you as their person. They are docile and loving dogs that can be playful and silly at times. Great for walking exercising companions. I love the harlequin (black and white like a dairy cow) and I find them to be most strikingly beautiful.

If your looking for a kind of big guard dog, sure I`d reccommend one but, if your more looking for a cute sort of lap dog I`d go for a jack russel terrier or chiwahwah, beagles are nice too.
