my daughter just turned one and i dont want to give her corn yet any suggestions?

I don't use corn in my shepherd's pie. My twins prefer peas :) You can actually add anything you'd like to personalize your dish, including zucchini, mushrooms, green or yellow beans, carrots (another fave amongst my twins). Broccoli didn't go over so well. They still prefer it as "cheese and trees" :)

I don't know why you don't want to give her corn yet, but you can definitely but other veggies in it, my mother put small bits of cooked broccoli, green beans, and carrots in a layer in her Shepard's pie and i always loved it

You can use any type of vegetables you like in Shepherd s Pie. It s also called Cottage Pie and contrary to popular belief, is NOT an English dish, it s an Irish dish. Traditionally they would use lamb as the meat but the American version of this meal generally uses ground beef. Shepherd s Pie is a very popular dish on St. Patty s Day along with the beloved Corned beef and Cabbage.

You can also use any kind of ground meat you want. Just adjust the liquid to suit the flavor of the meat you re using (e.g. if you use ground chicken, use chicken stock/gravy; or if you use turkey, use a turkey stock/gravy; or if you making a vegetarian version you could use a mushroom stock/gravy and chopped Portobello mushrooms to get that meaty flavor).

You can use all canned veggies to make this which makes life a lot easier or if you re like me, you can take the time to use all fresh vegetables. We even like to add tomatoes to ours.

If the dish is to thin or liquidy, add some tomato paste to thicken it; if the dish is too thick add some more stock/gravy or tomato sauce to thin it out.

If you want, you can even fancy it up a little bit by cooking the meat, add in onions and garlic and cook until transparent then add in red wine to deglaze the skillet before adding in vegetables. I have heard of people using their favorite beer to deglaze the skillet. I haven t done that so I wouldn t know if it tastes good or not though.

Also, if you want you can use chunks of meat rather than ground meat. When you use chunks of meat it almost reminds me of a pot pie with out the crust.

One more thing you can do is make a super easy Thanksgiving Day meal in one casserole dish. It makes clean up super easy. Just make the Shepherd s Pie the way you always do but use ground turkey for the meat and a good quality turkey gravy. Make it a little saucy (that s how I like it). Take the mashed potatoes and spread it across the bottom of the casserole dish. Pour all of your turkey and vegetables over the potatoes. Now make up some stuffing (either boxed or fresh...whatever you want) and spread out a fluffy layer of the stuffing across the veggies. Bake uncovered at 400* for 10-20 minutes. The longer you bake it, the crunchier the top of the stuffing gets (which is the way we like it). When you serve it just add a couple of dinner rolls and a side of cranberry relish and BAM, you got yourself some Thanksgiving food all in one.

I thought shepherd's pie was English. We don't put corn in it. We might put turnips and/or carrots in it, along with the onions and the shepherd - (sorry, mutton), but that's it. Moisten with stock, cook for about 30 minutes, pop the mash on top and put in a hot oven for another 15 mins. - or pop it under the grill till the mash is turning brown and a bit crunchy.

Certainly you can add vegetables other than corn. I do it all of the time. Even though I like corn, I get tired of it. Green beans sounds like a good choice to me.

As your daughter just turned one, she really shouldn't be having corn just yet.

you can actually put in green peas. BUT! do not put them whole as the texture of the green peas whole with the shepards pie will not go well. and the peas will then overpower the pie itself. what you need to do with them peas is to boil it first, and when cooked, mash it as you would with mashed potatoes. add butter, salt to taste, and some nutmeg and also milk. as u should already know, shepards pie has mashed potato on top. now! with the extra pea mash, it gives both a new level of flavour, a nice colour as well as a good serve of greens. you can also top this pie off with some gravy of your choice (i like the gravy they use for mash potatoes on my pie). enjoy :)

like both, fruits: berries, oatmeal, pears, peaches, dragonfruit, pomegranate.... Vegetables: CUCUMBERS, bok choy, green beans, broccoli,.... I actually guess the two are great.

Usually in shepherd's pie, there's meat, peas, carrots, and potatoes. But make it however you want!
