There's a new over-the-counter med that I think is called Abreva. Go to the pharmacy and ask someone there for help. I've heard it really works.

If the cold sore is already there.... that is you cannot take the medication ointment (can't recall the name) that you put on at the first tingling sensation to prevent the outbreak--which this definitely works.. ask the Dr. they can prescribe..it is not an over the counter ointment... But anyway- for a quick fix after the fact...brace yourself because this will hurt....you should rub some table salt into the sore every so often. This will sting like a @*#%, but it will help to dry up the sore much quicker than time itself. I have heard of other people using toothpaste also..but I never tried that. But hey, anything is worth a shot to get rid of those things!!
Take Care~

As soon as you feel the tingling - gently put Abrevia on it without a lot of rubbing. Then DON'T touch it for a day or two (except to put more Abrevia on). Be careful when you eat (don't eat things that will touch your face - try things that can easily fit in your mouth). And don't sleep on your stomach!

I have found that, depending on how early you catch the tingling, sometimes this prevents the cold sore from appearing. But at the very least, these steps prevent the cold sore from becoming large and ugly (prevents it from "bubbling" over).
