It's partly genetic. My dad and my sister both stutter, but not as bad as I do. I am very self-conscious about it, because I feel as though it is one of the obstacles preventing me from making lots of friends and becoming a good public speaker. I do not wish to see a doctor about it, because I think I can cure it myself if I just figure out a good way. Got any great ideas? Thanks!

I come from a family of stutterers who all got help from The Stuttering Foundation and their book "Self Therapy for the Stutterer." Several uncles and cousins worked diligently through the steps in the book and then started back over again until they overcame their stuttering with the exception of some very stressful occasions that set it off again. One uncle also went to a speech therapist who specialized in treating stuttering. He found his therapist through the foundation. Check their web site for loads of good information especially under "Brochures for All Ages" at www.stutteringhelp.org

my cousin had that also and this is what she did, she stood up in front of the mirror and told herself she wasn't going to stutter, it's like hypnotism if that doesn't work, try saying a sentence or two without stuttering and practice on it, soon enough you wouldn't stutter anymore. Good Luck!!!
