Bound's hubby here:

Your Remington Model 1903, by the serial number, sounds like it is a World War II production M1903A3 Springfield Rifle. Because it was a military issue rifle, it will not bear any caliber markingd. If it has not been altered or sproterized, you can expect that it is still chambered for the .30-'06 Springfield cartridge. If this is in fact an A3, the rear sight will be located on the bridge (back ring) of the receiver, and is calibrated to 800 yards range for the 150 grain full metal jacketed bullet as found in USGI M2 ammunition.

If you plan on keeping this rifle, and keeping it GI, to boot, you should consider purchasing the NRA reprint on the M1903 Springfield rifle. It contains a wealth of information on the rifle.

Good luck!

Bound's Hubby knows what he is talking about and has it exactly right. Here's a good link for the 03 and the 03A3:

If in good condition, these are fine rifles that will give you years of great service. It's an American classic, and was well made by people who knew how to make a rifle. Makes a great deer rifle, by the way.

If you want to maintain its collector value, don't drill holes in it (for a scope, etc.), don't refinish the metal, and don't sand, alter, or refinish the stock.

If you've never fired the rifle, it's always a good idea to have it checked out by a gunsmith first. They can tell you fairly quickly and cheaply whether it is safe to shoot.

If it is an unmodified Model 1903-A3, it is chambered for .30-'06 Springfield.

If you are asking if all BDL actions chambered for 243 Win are short actions - then yes they are. The 243 is a necked down .308 Win and its also a short action round. There would be no need to have a long action for a 243 - it would create unneccesary extra movement when cycling the bolt and also create extra weight for the person to carry.
