for north of Cairns self drive trips
go to Port Douglas - beautiful scenery all the way - small beaches to stop at and have a barbeque or picnic and Mossman Falls/Gorge (www.greatbarrierreef.aus.net) for west of Cairns go to Atherton Tablelands for south of Cairns go to Babinda Boulders (www.wettropics.gov.au) or Paronella Park (www.paronellapark.com.au) or East of Cairns visit Green Island and in around Cairns go to Kuranda markets take the cable car or drive yourself go see the Barron Gorge/Falls (www.rainforest-australia.com/barron_falls and lastly for entertainment and something to remember go and visit the Tjapukai Aboriginal Cultural Park (www.tjapukai.com.au)

ENJOY - tropical north Queensland its where the Rainforest meets the Sea.....

Quite honestly, don't bother with a car. All the places of interest around Cairns are well served by travel companies and they will pick you up from your hotel and drop you back there. They will arrange trips on the cablecar and railway to Kuranda - both are an absolute must. You can do tours of the Atherton Tablelands; visit Port Douglas; go to the Daintree River and Cape Tribulation; head out to the Barrier Reef for a day's fishing or snorkelling or scuba diving all starting from your hotel. For getting around Cairns itself, walk or take a taxi.

If you want to go back somewhere you went on an organised trip for a longer look, hire a car then and go for the day but let other people do the driving for you the rest of the time and enjoy the scenery - which is spectacular.

We were in Cairns for a week at Easter and honestly you don't need to hire a car as there are so many trips to book yourself on that your spoilt for choice, we did Port Douglas, Daintree and lots of beautiful tourist spots around Cairns, the coaches are comfy and air conditioned, the drivers are fantastic and informative, the prices are very reasonable and best of all you can have a few drinks along the way without worrying about driving so you get to see everything as well as been chilled out, have a good time its an amazing place and so very beautiful too.

Cairns to Port Douglas is a scenic drive. You could then drive onto Mossman Gorge for a swim..Depending on the weather and your budget I suggest a convertible.... You could also take a drive to Josephine Falls(south of Cairns) or you could go to the Atherton Tablelands www.athertontablelands.com.

Note....

Water contains agonising and lethal jellyfish, the water contains 15-20 foot crocodiles

And if you see any punk ostrages they are cassowaries that have claws like velocerapters and will use them

Go up to The table lands, Cape tribulation, the aborigony center near the cable cars.

AND the important bit... dive trips to the coral sea, cod hole or the taka shark dive
