Well you have to look at Ebay's current user agreement as to what they will use that information for. I doubt they use it for anything else.
Frankly, I don't recall giving them a SSN and I still have an active account there.
Ebay is pretty safe to use--I joined back in 1997 I was a full time seller on ebay from 1998-2003, and made a living off of it.
The credit card and SSN are used to verify that you are who you are, part of their antifraud program. It probably is also to assist the tax collector in terms of income tax and sales taxes that might be due as well.
Paypal is the easiest way to arrange for payments for Ebay purchases or to collect money from Ebay sales. Awhile back Ebay purchased Paypal.

A social security number? WHAT??!!!!! I've bought a number of items on ebay, and nobody has ever asked for that. They would have no legitimate reason to.
Credit card number, yes of course they do - that's how they get paid. Most ebay sellers accept Paypal, and that can be a good protection for your credit card number.

Yes, they can then run up your credit card. DON'T EVER give out your ss number.
And all the LEGITIMATE sellers on ebay that TAKE credit cards, do it through Paypal. So don't give your number to someone who emails you asking you for it - they're probably not the REAL seller, they just saw your auction and are pretending to be the seller.

I have never used ebay, I don't really feel comfortable about giving out my SSN and credit card information on line. But, I know people that do, and they say it is great.

You should be using Paypal to pay for all your ebay purchases. That is the safest way to go. I use Paypal all the time without any problems.

you shouldn't give people your credit card #, especially through ebay. Use a trusted site like PAYPAL to make sure that you're not ripped off.

No they don't ask for your ssn. I would open a paypal account. It's the most secure way to shop on ebay.
