At my church the worship team require that you turn to the person next to you and give them a holy hug at least three or four times throughout the service.

They also say stuff like, "Turn to the person in front of you and give them a high five and say 'Brother, will YOU be on the church cruise? I will'"

It's mean, but I really hate hugging and high fiving strangers, especially men.

I have never heard of that!

It sounds very strange and uncomfortable to be hugging on strangers. I remember there being handshakes when I used to go..

That system sounds like it encourage a little Unholy Groping to me..

I don't think you are being mean by feeling this way.

God does not maneuver us like puppets. He gave us free will for a reason and I would be very nervous if my church started scripting my life like that.

It really makes me wonder what else they are demanding /expecting of its people.

And like the other person said above... in our church men and women (Boys and girls) only give "side hugs" if they are inclined to be that intimate in the first place. Manditory hugs would be very awkward if you were a girl who happened to be surrounded by a bunch of men one Sunday morning. ----Just sounds inappropriate to me. And it doesn't sound like a model that the early church ever used.

My church only advocates handshakes, at the end of the service. I feel a little phony about that. As to hugging complete strangers, I would find that appalling.

in my church, we guys never hug a girl when the pastor says that, except maybe for couples. We at most give a handshake. maybe its because we asians are more conservative, but that actually solves the problem.

i can understand why! poor you... get out, and find yourself another religion. or, if you like this one, find another church. also, just out of interest, do they call women "brothers" too?
