Good question. I can tell you.
Its called Kaaba.
The Kaaba is the holiest place in Islam. The qibla, the direction Muslims face during prayer, is the direction from their location on Earth towards the Kaaba. It is around the Kaaba that ritual circumambulation is performed by Muslims during the Hajj (pilgrimage) season as well as during the Umrah (lesser pilgrimage). Although not directly connected to it, there is a semi-circular wall opposite the north-west wall of the Kaaba, known as the hatīm. It is 3 ft (0.9 m) in height and 5 ft (1.5 m) in length, and is composed of white marble. The space between the hatīm and the Kaaba was for a time belonging to the Kaaba itself, and so is generally not entered during the tawaf (ritual circumambulation). It is also thought by some that this space bears the graves of prophet Ishmael and his mother Hagar.
According to the Qur'an, the Kaaba was built by Ibrahim (Abraham) and his son Ismail (Ishmael [2]). Islamic traditions assert that the Kaaba "reflects" a house in heaven called al-Baytu l-Mamur

Yes, the first answer is right. It is a big dark room. The entrance is about 7 feet up one side of the kaaba, and inside there are marble panels around the walls with inscriptions from the Koran. Above the panels is a cloth with more verses from the Koran.
According to tradition, before Mohammed, it contained idols to other deities. These were removed when the locals converted to islam.

It's considered the House of God but not literally instead just as you would consider the Church to be one. Muslims do not worship or pray to the structure itself but the place it's located is considered holy. It's called the Kaaba, built by Abraham and his son Ishmael as gratitude to God. God ordered all the Mulisms to pray according to it's location as a symbol of unity. I'm not sure what is inside there now . Most probably empty.
After the time of Abraham, the pagans filled it up with their idol gods. When Muhammad(pbuh) came he threw them out. God fulfilled Abrahams's wish to make it a place of worship of future men through Muhammad(pbuh) by ordering his followers to make a pilgrimige there once in their lifetime if they can afford it.

A big dark room.
They don't pray to the Shrine or to the Rock. Do you Christians Pray to Saint Peter's Basilica in Rome?
When you go to Church do you pray to the altar, to the Organ, to the Stain Glass widows?
The Kaaba in Mecca (Makkah) is just the first shrine ever erected by man to God according to them.
