It means to use a fork or a potato masher to squish the butter over and over until it flakes up into small pieces that become coated with the flour. You do not melt the butter.

Easy, just cut the butter into small chunks right on top of the flour in the bowl. Then take the back of a forks and press on the butter, pushing it into the flour. Depending on what you are making, keep doing this until all the butter is "cut" into the flour in pieces from the size of a pea to a grain of rice. Having these little pieces of butter evenly mixed through your finished dough is what will give it it's flakiness.

Put a large hunk of cold butter in the mix and then break it up by cutting with a knife until it is in very small. Like the size of a pea. The hunk is the amount that the recipe list in its instructions.

Use a rubber spatula, and gradually put in portions while you mix it in. That's what I was always told. You "cut" the butter in it, by making portions, and working the butter, kind of like the consistency of a cream cheese ish base. (After it is mixed) Just making it softer and mixing it.

First answer is correct (Well many correct now, Ha!). You chop it in and it make like a crumble from the flour. You not want to use a mixer. I use a fork usually.
