The center-fire rifle most commonly used for marksmanship training and competition in the United States is the AR-15, arbitrarily defined as an "assault weapon" under the former Clinton Gun Ban and currently under some states' laws. Carolyn McCarthy (D-NY) is trying to bring reinstate this ban.

The GLARING STUPIDITY of some people NEVER ceases to AMAZE me no end! ! ! !
I have already written ALL the congress'people' who represent the state of Arizona in D.C., voicing my opinion AGAINST this and ALL Other restrictive 'gun control' measures aimed at law-abiding U.S. citizens, as ALL other firearms owners SHOULD! ! !

What about the SKS? They can use detachable clips, but it is also a very common hunting and sporting rifle. Uses the same ammo as the AK-47. Even the AK-47 is a decent hunting rifle. It's just as accurate as a 30-30 lever action. In fact, the ballistics are almost identical. It doesn't matter if they are used for hunting or not though. The second amendment has absolutely nothing to do with hunting. The problem with the anti-gun people that want to ban so-called assault weapons is that most of them don't even understand the difference between semi-automatic and fully automatic. They think the civilian legal version of the AK is the same AK-47 they see spraying bullets all over the place in the movies. Explaining the difference between real full auto assault rifles and civilian legal semi-automatics that just "look" like those types of guns would be a good start. The amount of ignorance among the gun control freaks never seizes to amaze me.

It is ridiculous.

NONE of the firearms on Mc Carthy's gun ban bill are assault rifles.

NOT ONE OF THEM!

Not the AR-15.
Not the M1A
Not the M1 Garand
Not the M1 Carbine
Not the Mini 14

These are simple, semi-automatic only rifles. Period.

To be a true assault weapon it has to be capable of selective fire - that is, different firing modes, or fully automatic fire.

The bill should be challenged as un-Constitutional, and it is a farce. Something on the order of less than 2% of gun crimes are committed with these firearms, and of that most are aquired illegally.

The bill will not stop crime - the Clinton bill did not stop any crime!

The MORON above me, user "extreme_right_wing_nut", is a wolf in sheep clothing, toting around this place trying to make others think that we should think like him. Like the people that call into radio shows and say "I'm a Conservative/Liberal, BUT...".

AR-15's ARE used at Camp Perry and ALL NRA service rifle competitions, and ALL shoots that allow service style rifles.

THAT IS a legitimate reason to own an AR-15 (or any of the guns I mentioned above). We have a Second Amendment - we have the right to arm and defend ourselves, our state, and our Country. We don't need to explain "no stinking good reasons" to own simple semi-auto rifles.

"A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the People to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed." -Second Amendment to the Constitution of the United States of America

"A militia when properly formed are in fact the people themselves...and include all men capable of bearing arms...To preserve liberty it is essential that the whole body of the people always posses arms, and be taught alike, especially when young, how to use them...The mind that aims at a select militia, must be influenced by a truly anti-republican principle." --Melancton Smith , Additional Letters From The Federal Farmer, 1788

"The militia, who are in fact the effective part of the people at large, will render many troops quite unnecessary. They will form a powerful check upon the regular troops, and will generally be sufficient to over-awe them." --Tench Coxe, Delegate to Continental Congress, Oct. 21, 1787

It is interesting isn't it? Every year, more people die from medical mishaps, improper medicine or overdoses, vehicle accidents, etc. We're to accept the idea that banning some guns will stop people from accidently dying or from being killed. I think it is really the image that they want to get rid of. Regardless, we can be rest assured that when the criminal has a hard time getting an assault rifle, he will find another to take its place. Then, I suppose we will need to eventually ban them all.

Yes, the whole "assault weapons" ban was a farce. Amazing how many people fell for it though. Some people STILL think it had something to do with machine guns. Hard to believe...

the ban they are trying to pass now is actually much more restrictive. ANY gun with a synthetic stock is included under it. think about it, any synthetic, that's most of the guns any more. all of the mini-14's and mini-30's would be included as well. too many more to list. we all have to write and call our elected officials and tell them that we oppose this outrageous legislation.

The AR-15 is NOT used for competition. If anything, it would be the M-1 Garand. You are a crank. You have no idea what you are talking about.

There is no legitimate reason to own an AR-15 or other assault rifle as a civilian. I own 5 guns. I am a competitive shooter. I am an NRA member.

If guns kill people then ban penciles because they make people misspell words................................

Sounds like all guns should be banned, eh?
Then ban the NRA

The best idea is to give everyone a gun then BAN the manufacture of ammo. Use gun as a club. How many kids at VT would have lived?
