I know people say the Neilsen rating system, but how can that be a good sample of the viewing public.

it's not really. i think you're supposed to have some special box attached to your tv, so they can record how many viewers. also, the numbers are off because a lot more people are using Tivo to record TV shows.

Yes as the other person said it is the Nielsen Rating System.
They will send you a log book and you report your watching habits. They give you a cash compensation. Maybe $1-$5 for your time.

I've read this but not sure, with cable boxes there is a way to also check what you are watching. I cannot confirm this. Maybe another poster can provide more detail on this concept.

nielson ratings, they send out a survey ti numerous person and ask them to write down the tv shows their watch for a week and send it back to them. they will tell each network show tha they carry and where it ranked in their survey.
