I'm a college student and I currently hate my job. Last night I worked a 12 hour shifts and didn't leave work to 2:30am. I have to be at work at 11am, today. I have to work all day and can't spend anytime with my own mother. I have 3 finals due tomorrow, which I have yet to completely (didn't think I would be working to 3am). I want to call out sick to work? Should I? What should I say?

I waited on the finals b/c I was suppose to get out of work early yesterday, then I was made to stay late. Someone called out.

Also, I honestly don't care about getting fired. I never have been before, but I'm graduating college in a few days and I'm just doing this for the extra money. This has nothing to do with my career and pays me min. wage.

Ask yourself why you need this job then consider your alternatives. In the meantime, your mom will understand your commitments to school and work. This is life. Give her a call.
If the job isn't right for you then get up the courage to quit and find something better. But don't do it in an immature matter. Calling in sick and quitting on the spot will not help you in the long run.
p.s. They cannot make you stay. You are not a prisoner. If someone else flakes on them that is their problem, not yours. Leave when your originally scheduled shift is over. College is your top priority, not this temporary job.
p.p.s. If you are not afraid of being fired then why didn't you walk out when your shift was over and why are you letting them change your Sunday shift? Your priorities don't seem to be quite right. Tell them, "No."
Seriously, they don't pay you enough to take on the responsibility of others. The supervisors and managers will just have to work harder.

Just quit. Seriously, you are in college, quitting a minimum wage job at your age will have no bearing on your career or your life for that matter. In fact, doing poorly on 3 finals would have more of an effect (even then, it won't have that much of an effect) than quitting an insignificant job.
Besides, your sanity is more important. If you are worried now about not spending Mother's day with mom and not studying, just think how annoyed and agitated you will be when you are at work today.
Just quit the job. You owe them nothing. In this country, its called being "employed at will". Your employer can terminate you with little notice. By the same token, you can quit today with no obligations.
Don't let the boss make you feel guilty about quitting either. He/she probably also hates the job and is miserable as well.
Just quit.

I have worked for over 20 years. Sadly, what I have learned is that employers who pay minimum wage are not so concerned about your life---school, prom, grandma's in town, etc. I would suggest calling in sick this one time. Don't quit unless you work out a notice. Call in sick, get your schoolwork done, and put your foot down at work in the future when someone "calls out" of work. It is not your responsibility to work an unplanned shift---it's the manager's job to find someone who CAN work. Know what? In the end the manager paying minimum wage doesn't really care. He just wants a warm body there to increase his bottom line (cash sales).

Pink Love,
It is called the game of life. There are a lot of people who do not like there jobs, probably 70% of people do not like them. I would recommend that you go to your job today and not call off. Calling off at the last second will probably jeopardize your job, and you do not want to loose it. If this has nothing to do with your career and it is a part time job, I would just stay with it until I graduate and then dump it. If it is too exhausting and the supervisor is overextending your hours, I would quit after graduating. Just like you said, it is extra money. If you do not need the extra money, just quit.

If you hate your job so much, you should get a new one. You should have a job where you can still be able to concentrate on your studies. Your life sounds a lot like mine. I work 2 jobs and I go to school full time. Occasionally I work at both jobs on the same day, and I don't get lunch breaks or 15 minute breaks or anything like that. I suggest getting a better job that you'll enjoy.

I would call in sick if that is possible. You could really just tell your boss that you had to work over and that caused you to mess up your study schedule and that you really need time for that priority. Ask to take off or to get off early. I would put school first. Plus that way, you might get to see your mom.

That's a very personal decision. Be prepared to get fired for calling in sick on a holiday, but there are other jobs out there.

If it's true that you are graduating in a few days, personally, I would go for my education before my seemingly unimportant job. I would hope your employer already knows of your circumstances, and possibly be more understanding with your predicament. However, he/she already must know that after you graduate you will be quitting, right? In other words, if your job will interfere in any way with your graduation, you have my permission to do what you have to do.

You must first think of yourself, your finals are what is most important at this moment. You have worked very hard to get where you are. Congratulations on your impeding graduation. And you will not need this job in a very short time. God bless****
