First off, Happy Mothers Day to all the mothers out there! I'm making my mother breakfast in bed. I have this recipe for FRENCH BREAKFAST PUFFS that calls for 1/3 cup of shortening, and I don't think we have any! Is there any substitute for shortening?

You could try butter or margarine, but when a recipe calls for shortening, it turns out best if that is what is used. With something like pastry, whatever you use should be really cold, your batter/pastry will be crumbly with pockets of whatever (shortening, butter etc.) throughout it. In the cooking process this will make the pastry light and flavourfulGood luck and Happy Mother's day to you as well

The best thing tu eat and it is all natural is butter!
Why to care about substitute? Only God knows all the chemicals they use in order to make that fat soft and edible.
Just this week i was served potatoe salad with rancid mayo! and the rest of the people eat it as if everything was ok. This are things that causes so many illness in people, they don`t really care what they put into their body and it seems that their taste buds and their noses are blocked.
When you feed yourself and others, think twice what you are putting in the body..it could be killing you slowly.

Lard, Butter or Oil. These may not work as good as Shortening, as it give a flaky Crust. But, they will probably work.
