Hey Jake,

Best time to take a protein shake is post-workout to feed your depleted muscles. Don't forget to include some carbohydrates in your post-workout meal.

However, if we're talking about strength training here, it's also helpful to have a small snack pre-workout, one that consists of both protein and carbohydrates. So I'd use my protein shake after a work-out and have something like a PB and J sandwhich on whole wheat bread or something similar before hand.
