Spinal specialist says I need a double fusion, my husband a single. Who has had these and how long were you laid up, meaning not be able to do anything? I don't expect to get right back up and work right away I mean light things, shopping, garbage, pain, bending etc. I was told by the specialist that I would be able to do anything I wanted in 6 months, this is the double fusion. he uses Titanium and bone. For a single fusion, please tell us. The pain has gotten worse and we are tired of feeling like disabled fools. This specialist does nothing but spines. he is supposed to be one of the best in te Chicago area. So How did you feel after the operation and for how long?? Thanks to all that answer.

What I am really asking is how long before i can get up and move around and do simple things, not the usual routine I had before the surgery, I know that will take time. I am so restricted the way it is now and suffering.

I've known many people to have back fusion. Even with a single fusion you're not going to be able to go back to your normal routine for about four months. It's going to take time to heal, but you will then have a normal life once again. The surgery is fantastic for pain removal. I like the sound of your doctor using titanium and bone. Titanium is One of the lightest metal and the strongest Metal, so you will not have future problems.

I've had back surgery and it took many months for me to be able to do anything. My surgery was different and really wasn't necessary. So I had a whole different scenario.

your doctor is giving you the correct answers about recovery, sometimes it's hard to accept the answers. Talk with your doctor again until you feel totally comfortable.

Any surgery to the spine has a risk. Fusion means just that, they bolt two vertebra together, so they can no longer move. I am off to see a Neurologist due to Discs pressing on the nerves and causing pain, while other nerves are firing left right and shoulder! If they suggest I need fusion, I think I will skip it. I have known too many people who really found no benefit from spinal surgery. The mere idea of being 'laid' up for months, does not appeal to me. However good luck.

Try to find a bowen therapist or an Egoscue therapist in your area. Both method are great at helping to heal spinal problems and preventing surgery
