I believe that people are often more inclined to believe in God as they approach the twilight of their years and face the giant unknown of "what happens when I die."

In our youth, we take life and health for granted and are often so preoccupied with earning a living and making our way that we don't spend time addressing the metaphysical, the mystical, etc. There are certainly people who do the opposite of this, to be sure.

As people experience the sadness of loosing their health, beauty, and one by one, the friends they spent their life with, its difficult not to be intimidated by ones mortality and impermanence. A person in the "Autumn of their years" often has more time on their hands and material resources to address these issues and to seek solace.

I believe that people believe in God because it is an inherent characteristic of man to explain things or want things explained. The vastness of life and nature , with its incredible highs and lows, its beauty and depravity, has to be explained away. It's human nature.

It is natural to fear death whether you believe in god or not. I think people observe religion because they sense the existence of a god and want to be closer to him or because they fear eternal damnation.

I don't think so. I have no fear of death, and I never have. I understand that death is only a part of life.
