As EL says - 'you can do anything you want'. However, I've never heard of a Beetle being turbo'd and question the engine and transmissions long term ablility to cope with the additional bhp? On the other hand, if it is suitable, have you considered "stopping power" - ie brakes? If it were mine, I'd get to work on the engine; strip it, balance everything and upgrade the fuel & exhaust system. It'd sound sweet and last well.

What on earth for? Not for speed , the cars are not designed for speed. Not for show.. the 'show' part about a beetle is its existing shape and unique history.
Not for comfort..(beetles and comfort generally do not exist in the same space at the same time) and definaltely not for economy in a $4 a gallon world.
Plus, the stress load on that little engine will prob. exceed the tolerances on the bearings and you will end up having to re-build it for no real return.
You want a turbo..? Buy an old 911 porsche...

You're better off buying a completely new engine with a turbo already installed. Check out www.thesamba.com for specific companies that sell these engines under the classified section.

Not recommended, those older cars engines are not designed for that level of performance. things like compression ratio, head design etc doesn't really support it, and the parts are not really designed to take those stresses.
My family has had like 5 or so of those cars from all age ranges, they are great all around cars, but one year we decided to put on a supercharger. Well it didn't last long. For the 3 months the car was way faster, then the engine burned out.
Could you do it, sure, but to make it reliable you would practically need to re-engineer the engine from the ground up.

Yes you can. AJ Simms at www.lowbugget.com sells a very nice kit or with complete motor kits. He put down 200 rwhp in Michagan I believe with the 1600 turbo kit, and drove it there round trip.
He's a great guy who builds some really nice carbs, and distributer kits that I own on my 72 bug. So I'm sure his trubo kits are among the best out there based on my past experience with him.

yes you can i have 2 with a blow through turbo setup! 1 is my gf's car i built for her and the other is mine and is a daily driver with a 2334cc,s/f heads,11:1 conpression,w30 engle cam, counterweighted crank, lightend flywheel and it puts out 243hp on dyno with 9psi boost and it's a daily driver! but don't be fooled theirs more to it than just slapping on a turbo and going it takes a bit of money to go through the engine around every 20,000 miles and more often if your like me and have a lead foot! but you get lot's of smiles when you bust a v8 mustang or vette and the rice burners! lol but it's worth the money id say if your ready to spend some money get rid of that junk (the stock engine) and buil you atleast a 1835cc witha blow through turbo you'l make about 183hp!

Yes, you can turbocharge these engines, but it's not a simple bolt-on procedure, you should really go for a full engine rebuild if you want the thing to last any time.
I second the suggestion to buy a complete, already turbo'd engine from someone who knows what they're doing.
