Read what you ticket says. The only time I did not use a ticket I bought I lost everything, including the return flight, which I still wanted. I had an accident and broken my arm, they were sympathetic but they would would not let me change the flight date. Some airlines will now give you an exchange "insurance" for an additional fee when you purchase, as far as I know none allow cancellation
