For a regular polygon with n sides of length s, the area is given by:

A = n/4 s^2 cot pie / n

this is also shown in http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polygon#Area

What does cot mean in this formula?

cot is an abbreviation for cotangent. In a right triangle, cotangent of an acute angle is equal to the adjacent side divided by the opposite side.

SInce cot is not on a key on the calculator, to find the area using this formula, you'll have to use 1/tan(pie/n). You do this because cotangent is equal to 1/tan. It is also equal to cos/sin.

It wasn't very nice for people to call you stupid. Just ignore them.

cotangent. cot = 1/tan
In a right triangle with acute angle X, cot X = side adjacent X / side opposite X

cot is a trigonometric function of an angle, eg: cot A is cot function of the angle A. It stands for co tangent of an angle. It is the ratio of adjacent side to the opposite side of an angle.

Referring a book for this would be of better help.

cot x = 1/(tan x) = (cos x) / (sin x)

So another way to think of the formula is: A = n/4 s^2 cos (π / n) / sin (π / n)

"Cot" is a trigonometric function meaning "cotangent," the inverse of tangent. It is equal to cos (cosine)/sin (sine).

means cotx = cosx/sinx
got it?

cot x = 1/(tan x) = (cos x) / (sin x)

cosec x = 1/(sin x)

sec x = 1/(cos x)

Yes you're right. It is when sin(x) ≠ 0. If you want to write it in mathematical notation. x ∈ R \ {nπ} where n ∈ Z (n is an integer).
