Is there a way to sync the carbs without buying a $100 vacuum gauge?

I never use sync gauges on twin cylinder engines.
Put your hands near the ends of the mufflers to feel the exhaust pressure coming out.
Adjust the carbs to get the same pressure coming out of each pipe.
Simple.

No... you need a tool to do it. I have mercury columns which are far cheaper than gauges and more accurate. 'Motion Pro' is the brand. The downside is they are awkward because you have to handle them carefully to avoid spilling the mercury... the need to take a a serious attitude to safety and storage should not be forgotten for a second.

They are a bit of an investment, but will last forever and work on any bike. Use it twice, it's paid for itself.
