By far the book. No question. The movie doesn't even come close to capturing the story.

I have read the book after watching the movie. The book is much more frightening, and it has so many points related to the hotel history which appears mysterious in the movie. For myself, I think the movie is better, Kubrick keeps something unrevealed, something scary, which affects the events without being identified. In the book, too many things are revealed at the end, and the conclusion sounded too silly. Finally I think that Stephen King is concerned with a Hotel which has an evil spirit of its own, while Kubrick is depicting the forces of evil inside a family suffering loneliness and disintegration. I advice you read the book for better understanding of the movie's background.

I read the book and then saw the film when it first arrived in the theater. I hated the movie version. Wendy is a strong woman in the book. In the movie she is a whiney and annoying. In the book you got the impression that the hotel was driving Jack insane. In the movie he seems sort of off from the beginning.

The book definitely, it's hard in general to make movies out of Stephen King's work. Some come out well, others go straight for the bloodbath instead of building suspense first.

I agree with dumb bunny, I think the movie is hugely over rated. They completly changed the ending and I hated Wendy so much I was rooting for Jack to kill her!
Read the book!!

What is it with this movie?
So many seem to rate it very highly.
Jack Nicholson is my favourite actor, but I absolutely DETEST this movie!
It is OTT rubbish, in my estimation.
The Simpsons' parody is better than the original.
As to the book -- I have no idea whatsoever, but I am certain that I do not want to read it!

the book was great the movie was rank I love Jack, but thought he was absolutely wrong for the role of Jack Torrance, and I really cant explain why. the remake with Steven Webber and Rebecca De Mornay is truer to the book.

I love Stanley Kubrick, so I have to say the movie. Not a big fan of the story, really.
