Many sea urchins are very good to eat, a few are very poisonsous.

Sea urchin spines are basically composed of calcium carbonate. If you step on one, and the spine lodges in your foot, that hurts, of course. However, the slow dissolving of the calcium can also be painful. Only about 80 of some 6000 species actually have thermolabile toxins.

If you get speared by their spikes, then yes, they release some toxins into you which can range from a bee sting type reaction to really bad - as in hospital visit required. One of my friends touched one and then next morning blew up like a balloon.

Their spikes are poisonous to an extent but they arent strong enough to kill you. Their insides though are not. they are edible. :)
