Can over washing and waxing a car have negative drawbacks?

I was wondering if washing and waxing a car everyweek can have negative impacts on the car's paint, etc. i've been washing my car and using meguiars gold class wax every week.

I cant believe the first person said that waxing removes paint!!
That is totally untrue! Polishing and buffing remove paint, waxing does not.

Its very important to wash AND wax regularly. Plant saps and bird droppings do a lot of damage to paint work. It you wax the car well, daily dirt and grime such as bird droppings wont actually get on to the paint, as the wax is a great barrier. It also makes the paint easier to wash too.

Once a week is good, you might want to consider a second coat of wax too, every now and again.

Meguiars Gold class is fantastic, one of the best you can get.

A word of caution, do not use sponges or cloths to wash the paint work. They trap dirt and then as you wash the car, you rub the dirt particles into the paint and scratch it, its like using sand paper. The best thing to use is a SPLIT bristle brush, with running water not a bucket if at all possible.

Washing and waxing every week keeps the car looking great but it does have a few drawbacks......

Every time you wash/wax the car you will be adding tiny swirl pattern scratches. You wont even be able to notice them at first but a year of wash/wax every week will cause the paint to have severe swirl marks in sunlight.

It does not matter how clean you get the car before waxing or what type of material you use during wash/wax.......it will get swirl marks.

Then you will have to have the car lightly buffed to remove the swirls. Hire a pro to do this.....as a first time can badly damage the paint. Also make sure the shop is using 3M Finesse-it micro finishing compound. This is the best stuff.....it will leave the car swirl free with a deep wet gloss shine.

There are some drawbacks to cleaning the car weekly. But if thats what you want to do........go ahead : ) Just be ready to pay for a polish once a year.

Waxing makes your car look lovely and shiny, but strips a little bit of the paint off.

You want to wash as often as possible, because the dirt and pigeon **** can actually have a negative impact on the paint (modern pigeon **** is acidic, due to the level of pollution in our cities, so it damages the paint on cars).

Waxing should be done as little as practical.

I heard of a guy who would wipe the engine of his car clean, every day. You don't want to get too into your car.

well for one washing your car is a great thing to do no matter what but i wouldnt use any wax on the vehicle i have been detailing cars for twenty years and dont use wax unless its the teflon spray wax which will protect the paint wax itself will just build up onto the paint and collects dirt trust me i know
