why are southampton people called scummers by the people in portsmouth and why do the portsmouth people hate the people from southampton. what is the reason for the love/hate between the 2 citys

No No No. it goes much deeper than that.
1.Southampton historically was famous for building commercial ships while Portsmouth build warships.
2.During a workers strike in Portsmouth, ship builders from Southampton crossed picket lines.
3.Southampton has played in the top flight many more years than Portsmouth so Saints fans tend to look down on Portsmouth as young up-starts trying to eat into Southampton's fan base and drawing away potential sponsors.
4.The whole Harry Rednapp incident. Rednapp quit Portsmouth cause he "needed a break from football", only to sign on as the Saints coach 4 days later. After disassembling the Southampton squad to build a team in "his" image he quit, only to re-sign with Portsmouth, again 4 days later. Southampton were later religated to the championship. Thanks again Harry!! All this despite the fact he lives in the Forest outside of Southampton.
5.The Portsmouth kit is most godawful. Go Saints !!!

All class comes into and out of Southampton....dreggs go in and out of pompey....simple as. Think of the QE2 from Southampton and the red funnel ferry of Portsmouth.......Says it all.

Its just friendly jealosy, Southampton is such a great place and Portsmouth is so run down.

cos its a local derby...no other reason...everybody has a local team they hate or love...neither is my team but i prefer portsmouth of the 2....
