I would see an orthopedic surgeon if your condition continues or fails to improve with the recommendations below.

Knee cap problems are quite common. The knee cap functions to help straighten out the knee. It does very little when the knee is straight. Pain associated with popping is usually treated with exercise. Exercises that are low impact and should have little stress on the knee cap should be done with the knee relatively straight.

With that in mind try these activities.
1) swimming (avoid breast stroke kick)
2) bicycle (put the pedal as far away from the seat as possible)
3) elyptical machine
4) nordic track
5) walking

Braces tend to weaken the knee, are rarely recommended by orthopedic surgeons, and are of little value for the long term.

If you are suffering, again seek the appropriate medical advice from an orthopedic surgeon. Rheumatologists treat patients that have auto immune diseases like Lupus and Rheumatoid Arthritis. Your condition is mechanical not an auto immune disease.

Best to see your doctor here. This may be some torn cartilage, there are quite a few in the knee area and sometimes we don't think about this in sports and living.
He'll probably have you get some MRI's and X-Rays. Possible surgery down the line.

Did you injure your knees? My friend had the same problem. She had fallen while she was roller skating with her son once and she had bone chips in her knee. She had to have surgery to have them removed. You should go see a specialist while you can still walk.

You should get a referral from your GP and go see an rheumatologist... you've probably got a state of arthritis coming on .
