The Guinness book of records holds a record for some person digesting steel nails. Thing is, the stomach has a pH of 1-2 and that definitely doesn't break down steel. So how low would his stomach acidity have to be to break down steel?

Even though his stomach was torn up after a while, he actually dissolved the steel nails.

As long as the nails were not made of stainless steel, and were actually made of mild steel, of course the HCl in the stomach would slowly dissolve them.:

Fe + 2HCl ----> FeCl2 + H2.

This is not the same as digesting.

He didn't digest them. His teeth were strong enough to grind them down to powder. His digestive system was all torn up due to his diet.
