Paying attention to what actually feels good as opposed to something that makes me forget myself or go "numb."

When I eat right, my digestion is good, I have more energy, I feel better.

When I do something kind for others, I have a genuine sense of well being, something that doesn't go away.

If I have a couple of beers, I don't feel better, I feel less. When I think back on the experience, I can't reclaim the "good" feeling. It has consequences (bloating, headache, inability to drive, behaving foolishly) that aren't pleasant to think back on.

When I listen to the wise person who lives in my head, take a second to take care of myself and others, my life is better in the moment and in retrospect. Do that long enough it becomes a habit, and you become a good person.

I have found it is the only path to happiness, but we all interpret "good person" to mean something slightly different if not dramatically. I would have to say reading about history, paying attention to many current events, and things I have done wrong in the past, constitute the main basis for my motivation, but when I start writing about it, there seems to be many reasons, so if you want more contact me. Good luck!

Following the examples left by my blessed parents... and to be a good example for my sweet children. Karma also factors in, as well as the wonderful feeling I get just doing something good for another person.

Yeah being nasty means people are really nasty back and it is so draining because we need people to be supportive of us. And usually they have a massive support network who will also be nasty to me, so i am totally outnumbered and not equipped to handle the abuse.

Debating too much - even if i'm right - leads to depression ultimately because it becomes hard to get along with people.

I was raised that way and feel it is what I am supposed to do. Treat others like you would like to be treated. How ever, nice guys finish last and people walk all over you if let them.

Laziness, really: It takes too much energy to be mean and nasty all the time. It's easier to be nice. Sorry that's not very profound.
