Dear Vanessa,

I think that you're placing way too much emphasis on color to determine who your friends are. If you have friends who are white, and they are good friends, then you should be with them because they ARE your friends. Color should have nothing to do with it. As far as your Mexican friends, there is no rule that says you have to balance out your friends according to race. Ask them this: "What if I was white, was your friend, but my white friends said I was becoming too Mexican, would that upset you? " I would think so.

You don't forsake any friend, regardless of race or nationality, but you embrace them all, because they are your friends. And you do not lose your ethnicity because you are friends with a certain group of people. Be yourself, and be proud of who you are and where you came from.

We're all people, and we should always welcome one another in friendship.

It really doesn't matter (unless it does).

But I think geography plays a role. Do you live in a area where there are more Anglo? That can be a reason why you have more American friends than Hispanic. I don't mean to be racist in any way. No. Peace. Good luck, girl.

i understand. i'm half mexican/white. my dad's white, but we live in the area of my mom's family. I feel guilty that i have forgotten all the spanish from childhood.

As long as you remember where you came from, and genuinely love your family you'll be ok. YOU have to know who you are before people will understand you. be proud of your heritage, but also respect yourself - if you feel comfortable and happy with the direction of your life, let your family come to terms with it at their pace that you might act different, but you're not ashamed.

ok. so?

i'm mexican too and the same happens to me!
i just don't fit in very well with other latinos because i don't look all that mexican.

my sister is always saying that i have no friends because the few friends i have are white.

i think the only solution is to ignore the criticisms, and just try your best to be nice to fellow mexicans and if they respond, good, and if they don't, it doesn't matter cuz you tried your best.

absolutly nothing. If you live in the united states and are a citizen then you are not mexican, you are american. and american is not "white", after all, salsa is the #1 condiment in the united states. My dad,s mexican, my moms arab, me, i'm an american.

You are friends with those you feel the most like yourself with, and it has nothing to do with your race. Most of my friends throughout my life have been of different races and cultures, and I think that is a positive aspect to see your friends as your family and not as colour-coded acceptance.

You should keep up with your native language, it's one aspect that many who come to America as kids lose throughout their lives as they try to "fit in". My husband once spoke his native Korean, but was told not to in school in the States ... he eventually forgot most of it.

Keep on being yourself. That's the best way of existance. They'll learn to accept you as you are... And not you pretending to be what they would want you to be.
