Kjetil: We have X amount of Energy and matter, matter can be converted into energy, but not eliminated, so It's a fixed amount.

Things like these (for now at least) have to be a matter of faith and belief..

I personally believe that the universe and life is of some intelligent design..things are too suspicious to be an accident..but there are scientists on both sides of the fence. There are a lot of popular books that describe the ideas you are interested in a somewhat easy to understand format.

Two I can think of that are very popular are:

The Elegant Universe, and Fabric of the Cosmos, both by Brian Greene.

I personally believe the fact that the universe exists and seems to be expanding from an initial singularity kind of suggests some sort of birth at some time. Whether something intelligent created the universe, or whether it is somekind of massive, incomprehensible life form that we are apart of, I don't know. I don't think anyone knows or will know that anytime soon...besides how can we know for sure, if everything we learn and see is just an interpretation?

(even the idea of energy and matter is just an interpretation of whatever it is that is out there)

Good luck in your search!
